Hi Michel,

seems as if I have to be more active on this forum - it won't let me use the communicationsystem, aaaarr.... could You please send me a short mail to my private adress couchkollaps (a) web.de, I'll answer asap.

Thanks for Your nice answer! To show You what I am planning (and to assure that all kinds of plans are highly appreciated) here's some sample photos - wargaming miniatures in 1/6000 scale:

Hi Christian,

my apologies for not replying earlier: I might have missed your question entirely had I not browsed this forum beyond the first page! But thanks for your interest.

The plans for both the Hr.Ms. Holland and the Sumatra were found in the book mentioned in the build thread: "Nederlandsche Zeemacht, Pantserschepen, Pantserdekschepen, Monitors". They were quite basic but seemed to work well. Today - it's been six years already - I would do a better job, I hope. The Sumatra never went beyond that one photograph and was discarded.

Drop me an email/private message - use the button under this post - and I can get you some more info.

Cheers,

Michel

Hi Michel,

I found this old thread, and I'm fascinated by Your skills and the subjects You chose to build. I very much enjoyed reading it!

could You please tell me a source for plans of Hr. Ms. Sumatra and Hr. Ms. Holland? i'm building at a very small scale, so every size is highly recommended!

Tanks a lot!

I've submitted her to the gallery! That means the end for this scratchbuilding thread, which will now happily drop down the list into the archives.

Thanks for all the support!

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I really wasn't bashing myself or anything, as I said I'm very fond of how she turned out to be. I was just listing the things I would do better next time (see the USS San Fransisco - I easily did four times as much sanding and filling on the hull). Perhaps I said it wrong.

I really like it and as Dino says, white is not an easy colour to use so don't be hard on yourself

I agree, it came out looking nice. I find that digital pics can really scare the heck out of you.

Yes she certainly looks good. You shouldn't be disappointed, the ship is much smaller than on the pictures I guess and you always see roughness and errors on pictures, yet the real model certainly looks very good for its size. A first try can never be perfect as you know! Excellent job, I love those rare subjects of yours! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Indeed Revell white leaves a pretty rough surface. I've noticed that on my Queen Mary II and Excel...

Michel, I think you can be happy,

The subject is rare and very nice.
The overall look is good, and white isn't so easy to be used :thumbs_up_1:
The amount of small details add a lot of realism

Just a bit of rigging, some figures and a good water base and the beauty will be at home!

I agree with Dino. I really like the job you've made of this and it's been interesting to follow it.

Cheers,

Rob

Hr.Ms. Holland is now 99% complete. Some paint touch-ups remain to be done. Pictures taken while anti-fouling red is still wet!

Mayor gripes about this model:
Hull is not smooth enough. No decent consistent portholes. Revell White leaves rough texture. Masts are not in a historically correct configuration. (there never were any fighting tops, only in design stage). Very rough feel overall.
But hey, it's my first cruiser-sized scratchbuild - and I love the old tub anyway!

Finally, some work on the foredeck. Chain, railing, anchors, anchor hoists. This area still needs: gilded crest, anchor chains, pole with flag, some portholes perhaps...

She is becoming really a nice Pantserdeckschepen! :good_job:

But there is also the usual message for the scratch builder: HP Models announced kits of two ships of this class: Gelderland and Nordbrabant. They also announced the AA battery version of Gelderland, Niobe. Also the coast defence ships/armoured cruisers (Pantserschepen) Jacob van Heemskerck (also as AA German battery Undine), Hertog Hendrik (also as AA battery Ariadne) and De Ruyter are announced. Good news for fans of Dutch ships.

Right now I don't know wether to hate or to love HP Models. :big_grin:

Finally, the artillery is placed, the boat supports and davits are in place, and I've installed the 'ridge' on the hull, made from thin metal wire. Now she really looks like a armoured cruiser!

To do: paint touchups, install boats, finish bow and stern areas with railing, anchor hoists, anchors, crests...maybe some sort of rigging with flags.

Thanks for asking. No pictures this time, but I can report that I am now working on the 16 boat support beams, made from .05mm ... strips of paper soaked in CA. It's a harrowing task fitting them into the superstructure but thankfully the material is cheap. I ran out of suitable PE strips. Next are the remainder of the guns and then finishing the hull sides.
Things to do:
* boat supports
* boats
* 6 guns w/ shields
* stern / bow decoration
* stern / bow railing, anchors / anchor hoists.
* detailing the hull sides: the armoured deck ridge, portholes, ladders

Perhaps I can finish tomorrow...

BUT... I have started the hull for the USS San Fransisco C-5! Jay!
