Topic review - 1:72nd scale Scharnhorst.

Post subject:  Re: 1:72nd scale Scharnhorst.  Reply with quote
In days far past I have used the various archival 100% rag Strathmore heavy Papers for construction of Model Railroad, buildings, ship superstructures, even rolling stock and trucks. A versatile material and has held up well for some of the items I produced for more than 50 years now.

Nice work!

hello mr.paul . Thanx for the tips and your model is really looking amazing . The hull is extremely tough to coat with paper for me since i can only work from rib to rib and i must do either left or right . The main thing is that it angers me since i cant get that smooth finish that i have seen , i am making my superstructures from litho to give it that metal look and finish

Hello Diederick 44,

Are you assembling a paper model? In this case you are in for a rough time, until you get the hang of it.When dealing with paper models, you must first have a strong framework assembly to maintain stability while applying the sides and the hull sections. Do not rush things. One piece at a time and let the adhesive dry. The best adhesive you can use for paper is UHU. A german product, and is very good; just buy the large tube, as the little ones do not last long.
If you are using cardboard, please note that it has the same properties of the wood. cardboard has like veins running through the laminations, so if you try to bend the card in favour of the lines of the veins, you will obtain a perfect circular pattern. But if you try to bend it the other way round, you will end up with nothing but a cardboard full orf tears and kinks.

Hello Luky,

The main material I used for both the super structure and the turrets is 1mm thick cardboard. Of course to gain the strength I needed, many a times I applied more layers of cardboard.
But all in all, cardboard proved to be quite easy to handle and faithfull, and once treated as it shoukld be, can be sanded down like wood.

This is one big project I can't miss...
I love scale 1:75 and everything close to it, it gives a good size and good detailing possibilities.

Greetings Josse

Good morning all,

Hello Song Jung Gun _ Many thanks for looking in and for the kind words.

Hello Diederick44 - Many thanks for your kind interest. I first saw a picture of the Scharnhorst when I was 6 years old, and Immediately fell in love with the ship. I always had a soft spot for three gunned turreted ships, but the Scharnhorst had a beautifull supersturcture and hull. A long time ago I purchased the set of David McGregor scale 1:200 and upscaled them to 1:72 scale. Of course, you have to put in mind that the scale plans are not always accurate, so it is of the utmost importance that you always check with real photos and pictures. reasearch is very important.

Cheers.

Paul.
