Topic review - 1:72 MV Sycamore - Multirole Aviation Training Vessel
Author Message

Some progress on the MATV Sycamore in recent weeks.

I have made a few more fittings such as radars and anchor winch. I have constructed and fitted the flight deck nets. Also started fitting some railings.

I fitted a couple of motors and the electronics in preparation for its first on water test.

All you need to do improve this luxury yacht is scoop up some beauties from Bondi or Coogee.

Great job, indeed the name at the stern does seem to have some possible minor improvements, but the flight deck looks stunning! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Handsome ship, I didn't know of her existence before this topic started! :woo_hoo:

The flight deck was covered in masking tape then the markings were drawn onto the tape. The areas to be painted were hand cut with a sharp exacto blade and the appropriate areas of tape were removed ready for painting. White paint was applied in several thin layers with an air brush

The ships name was done with a mask made from vinyl (cheap book covering vinyl). I used my wife's scan-n-cut machine to produce the mask. The scan-n-cut machine did struggle to produce such small letters. This was an experiment and it did not turn out quite as well as I had hoped but it is still acceptable.

The lettering and helicopter deck marking are done from cutting a mask?

very interesting-- from some angles it has the look of a modern Super-yacht.

looks like some sharp modelmaking!

The MV Sycamore is used by the Royal Australian Navy as a training ship for a variety of tasks including helicopter pilot training.

A couple of years ago I started building a 1:72 scale model of this ship. I first built a wooden hull then took a fibreglass mould. Finally making a fibreglass hull.

Construction has progressed slowly over the last couple of years but the model is now starting to take shape. The attached photos show how construction started.
