Sounds like a cruise I took around Sandiego bay on a choir tour my senior year. The captain/crew were giving facts about the military installations around the area as they drove us around. My friend and I stood on the bow and corrected most everything they said, unfortnantly (or luckily for them) they couldn't hear us at all. I mean, honestly, one of the guys was talking about a mooring quay and he said "if you notice those big cement blocks over there by the island, we like to call those 'big cement blocks'...." real intelligent...

And I've been tour guide before for my friends...

The Imperial War Museum at RAF Duxford had a real Bf-109E flying for several years (put together from parts of two acft downed during the Battle of Britain). As I understand it, the RAF wanted it back for their museum at RAF Hendon. Its last flight was with an RAF Air Marshal at the controls... Well, he flipped it and bent some sheet metal.

The last time I was at Duxford (1998), they had a Spanish He-111 that they were just starting to restore to flyable condition.

I never have seen the CAF, but I went to Duxford many times and saw most of their collection flying at one time or another.

Kenny,

This happened a few years ago when they were trying to be politically correct. I had been a fan of theirs up until then. :mad_1:

the Confederate Air Force changed its name!? when?

I believe the Commemorative Air Force (formerly known as Confederate Air Force) has a 'Spanish' He-111 and Me-109 in flying condition.

Texans as Zero can work. Texans as Me-109 NOT. See Dutch movie epics Soldier of Orange and recently Blackbook. It's a disgrace.

That's right. The Spanish had finally gotten around to phasing these out, and a movie prop company bought oodles of them. When they were shown parked or flying, row upon row, that was no computer graphic.

Enough for a whole Luftwaffe for some tinhorn despot to terrorize his neighbors with. Makes me wonder what ever became of them..would have made fine museum pieces or airshow warbirds, even with RR engines.

I suppose those were the planes left over from the days when Hitler thought Franco was in his pocket. I'm sure the Merlins were a fine upgrade. :lol_spit_1:

Les, if correct the me-109's & he-111's were actually spanish aircraft using merlin engines.

Yes, a whole generation has grown up thinking the Japanese used angle-decked carriers and Dauntless dive bombers.

If you think the F-20s made lousey MIGs, I saw one movie (I think it was titled "Hotshots II") where F4 Phantom IIs were supposed to be Russian MIGs. At least the Tiger IIs were small and pointy like a MIG-21. Nothing in the world looks anything like a Phantom, and it was really annoying to see one with those red stars on it.

At least in "Tora, Tora, Tora" they used modified AT-6 Texans to represent Zeros, and came pretty close, in my opinion.

Best effort was "The Battle of Britian" with real-life Me-109s, He-111s, and Spitfires. Small detail changes, would take a real nitpicker to notice. Wonder whatever happened to them?

I got kicked out of the tv room by my parents when they were watching the "first time on television" showing of Midway (must be about 30 years ago now). I kept pointing out how all the stock footage was sooooo wrong for that battle...

Yeah, but that was the first movie I ever saw that had accurate cruisers and destroyers (in color) during the Dolittle raid.

Most of the Midway attack footage was cut from "Tora Tora Tora". In fact, in one scene you can see the top of one of the battleships masts.

All of the Doolittle raid was cut from "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo".
