Here's Essex's plan of the day from seventy years ago. At this time, she, Wasp (CV-18 and CVG-14), and San Jacinto (CVL-30 and CVLG-51) were "warming up" their air groups with their first combat against Marcus Island (19-20 May), and would then sail to Wake Island for attacks (23 May). CAG-15 would go on to great fame as the highest claiming American naval aviator of the war. And a certain VT-51 pilot would gain fame as the youngest naval aviator at that time, and later become the 41st president of the United States, and select the best public university in the United States as the location for his library.

One more Buccaneer (since it's Mother's Day). There's a mention of future ace and Hollywood actor Bert Morris in this one, as well some excellent period cartoons by J. B. Strack...

I'm glad y'all like them. I'll check into sharing them with NavSource.
Here's some more (it might be a week or more before I get time to scan any more). It's a pamphlet that contains some of Essex's statistics. These stats were later incorporated into her cruise book, "Saga of the Essex".
If there's continued interest, I will post more as time & schedules allows.

MFH, thanks for posting these. I am fascinated by the details, the professionalism and it brings to life how the war was fought on the USS Essex.

Love these sort of things. Post as many you'd like I'd suggest sending these into NavSource so they can add them to CV-9's page. http://www.navsource.org/archives/02/09.htm

It was my uncle's (he passed away in 1990), but it's now in my possession. If people are interested, I can post some more (I've got most newspapers prepared by the ship, some more plans of the day [a total of two dozen], articles prepared by journalists on board, poems, cartoons, a few (not very revealing as to modeling help) photos, etc.).

I'm just curious to see if anybody likes stuff like this. I don't think it will help make any models better, but it might give a feel for life on one great ship. I hope the reduced file sizes don't make them unreadable...
First, some air department plans of the day from seventy years ago.
