China’s Third Type 075 LHD Starts Sea Trials

China's third amphibious assault ship, a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) known as Type 075, departed the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard (Shanghai) to start its sea trials on November 25. The vessel is intended for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy).

A video shared by a local ship spotter on Bilibili (Chinese video platform) on November 25, shows the landing helicopter deck being towed by tug boats and leaving Shanghai harbour to commence its sea trials. For the record, the vessel was launched in January 2021.

China’s first Type 075 landing helicopter assault dock completed its first test voyage on Sunday, and is expected to join the
Chinese navy’s
marines next year, military analysts said.
However, a military insider said the amphibious warship was still awaiting the launch of the aircraft it would carry: the naval versions of the Z-8J and Z-20J, which are modified based on the air force’s Z-8 and Z-20 armed helicopters.
Having left a shipyard in Shanghai
for the first time on August 5
, the Type 075 assault carrier returned last Sunday after completing an 18-day sea trial, according to photographs circulating online

China’s First Type-075 Assault Carrier Is Starting Sea Trials
The Chinese Navy's newest amphibious warfare asset, the Type-075 LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) is setting sail for the first time.
H I Sutton 28 Jul 2020
The vessel, which was built in Shanghai, has been fitting out since it was floated on September 26 2019. Candid photos surfacing on the Chinese internet show it being fueled, and tugs readied.
The Type-075 represents a step-change in Chinese Navy (PLAN) amphibious warfare capabilities. It will enable better over-the-horizon landing capabilities and improve air cover. And there are already rumors of the follow-on Type-076 LHD which is expected to include EMALS (Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System) for UCAVs or crewed aircraft. At this stage these rumors should be treated with caution. But they do give an indication of the direction PLAN amphibious capabilities are going.
In addition to the well-deck for Type 726 hovercraft (generally equivalent to the US Navy’s LCAC – Landing Craft Air Cushion), the LHD will have a large rotor-wing component. This will include the ubiquitous Z-8 transport helicopter which is based on the French SA 321 Super Frelon. More modern types seen aboard, in mock-up form, include the naval variant of the Harbin Z-20. This is, in our opinion, a copy of the Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk / Sea Hawk family.

China Finishes Its Second Large Amphibious Assault Ship
Now there are two of them.
by Kris Osborn
Report Advertisement
The Chinese Navy has now launched a second large amphibious assault ship engineered to carry weapons, helicopters, troops and landing craft into war, a move which further changes international power dynamics by strengthening China’s ability to launch expeditionary maritime attacks.
The ship is described at the second Type 075 Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD), somewhat analogous to the U.S. WASP-class. This Chinese amphibious assault ship reportedly displaces as much as 30,000 tons and is able to carry as many as 28 helicopters, a report from Naval News states. The report adds that the new People’s Liberation Army Navy LHD is likely powered by a diesel engine with 9,000kW, four Close In Weapons Systems and HQ-10 surface-to-air missiles. The new ship’s “aim is likely to increase the “vertical” amphibious assault capability with the very mountainous East Coast of Taiwan in mind,” the Naval News report writes.
The addition of more LHDs certainly increases China’s maritime attack power, making it a formidable threat along the Taiwanese coastline. Photos of the ship show well-deck in back, capable of launching ship-to-shore transport craft similar to the U.S. Navy Landing Craft Air Cushion or newer Ship-to-Shore Connector. Such a configuration makes it appear somewhat similar to U.S. Navy WASP-class which, unlike the first two ships of the America-class, also operates with a well-deck from which to launch large-scale amphibious assaults.
The Chinese LHD operates with a displacement of roughly 10,000-tons less than its U.S. counterpart. However, despite an apparently smaller size, it may operate with as many or more helicopters; if reports that the Chinese LHD can operate 28 helicopters are true, that would appear to be a larger number than the roughly 22 operated by U.S. LHDs. Regardless, it does not appear as though the Type 075s operate anything like the Short-Take-off-and-Landing F-35B stealth fighter which launches from U.S. LHDs. F-35Bs, combined with Harrier Jets and Ospreys are likely to push the number of aircraft operated by U.S. LHDs somewhat higher than that Type 075. The aviation centric first two America-class ships and the legacy WASP boats both now operate with F-35s. Having the F-35 is likely to give U.S. LHDs a decided advantage over these emerging Chinese counterparts; not only does it bring the prospect of stealth and air support, but also brings new dimensions of ISR to maritime warfare. The possibility of establishing air supremacy during an amphibious assault with an F-35 or even merely fortifying an advance with 5th-generation air power, is reshaping amphibious attack strategy with unforeseen advantages.

This design lacks the consistent and fairly careful stealth shaping common to all recent Chinese warships, including type 071 dock landing ship. So I think it is a fanboy work, not a real design model.

Oh I'm pretty suspect about "how real" this design is. Contractors make models all the time in an attempt to sell their design ... ships, aircraft, vehicles, etc. Marketing works well with Congressmen and those who don't know anything about designing weapon systems.

Tracy,

Another point about this design, they likely would learn the same lessons that the USN learned with sponsons in the forward quarters of the ship. They get the crap beat out of them. I came across photos (I don't remember where and didn't scan any of the photos) in 80-G showing sponson damage to USS FORESTAL after her first encounter with rough weather. That is why they were deleted on future versions of the large carriers.

Are we putting too much stock into a model built by a private firm? We don't know what company this is, why they produced it, and for whom.

Perhaps, but that outboard position proud of the hull like that makes it easier to direct any explosion out and away from the primary structure. I think providing the ability to jettison these structures is a bit of a stretch, but it's within the realm of possibilities as well.

But, the location of the missile launchers makes a darn good aim point to cause damage to the ship with a pretty small weapon.

I don't see the positioning as any great danger to the air group. Operate from the forward spots while the aft VLS is designated the "active" launch group. Spot aircraft aft and more to starboard if possible when the forward port launcher is "hot" and dial in a knot or two of crosswind to blow the smoke away from the deck. Lots of different ways you can integrate the two, although I suspect that they wouldn't often plan on normally firing during air operations as a SOP.

The positioning is good in that you can more easily protect the rest of the ship from any fires or explosions than if it were centrally mounted the way the Burke's and most others do.

If they adapted a cold-launch system and slanted the tubes outbound 10 or 15 degress they could probably minimize the danger to aircraft on deck.

Perhaps and likely like you said, Chris. Still, they seem (the sponsons) dangerously close to the aircraft park and are not in a different deck like some other carriers show up their launchers. Not even a "secure" area around the silos. Well, it's just a model for starters. The outbound angle seems a better option now that I picture it in my mind.
