If your paint cup is plastic though, I'm not sure but some types of thinner might scar it.

That is exactly what I used to clean my airbrush when using enamel paints. Plus once a month I would use EZ AIR Environmentally Safe Airbrush Cleaner by DCI Industries of Wheeling, Illinois. This is a concentrated cleaning solvent that mixes with water. I take apart the airbrush and soak all the parts in the solvent for 24 hours. Airbrush shines like new after taking it out to dry and reassemble.
I now use Acrylic paints and still use the cleaning solvent once a month to get a really clean airbrush.

My local art supply house has an enviro-friendly brand of cleaner that's made by a company in New Bunswick, Canada. Works well.
