Mr. Jones,

You will need to get rid of the extra 8-barreled pom-pom abaft the island and the one on the centreline on the foredeck. All the 3-D printed versions of Furious in late-war fit have included the spurious additional pom-poms from Kosela's Kagero publication.

Given the direction of travel in FL 17769 I think you meant Furious' starboard side. Here is a clearer photo of her starboard side in that scheme (A 22689): https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item ... /205154864

This is the portside, similar to what she wore before but the forward dark camouflage panel is essentially further aft and a slightly different shape and the aft dark extends further forward than hitherto (A 21790): https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item ... /205154055

Photos of Furious in her mid-1944 camoflage scheme are rare - the only one I have found online is a photo of Pursuer during Operation Tungsten in April 1944 which shows Furious' port side [edit - starboard side - see post below!] in the background (IWM FL 17769) at https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item ... /205017533. It is not the same scheme as shown in several photos such as IWM A 17563 at https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item ... /205119703, which was (I think) worn from soon after her return from her US refit (although slightly modified as time went on). A couple of onboard photos taken during Tungsten appear to show a single-colour flight deck - they also show two of the twin 20mm powered mountings in the pockets just aft of the "bridge" and flying control positions either side of the for'd part of the flight deck. Steve indicated that there is a starboard side [edit - port side - see post below!] view of Furious in this (third) patterned scheme - is it available online?

hi All, I recently acquired a 1/700 3D printed HMS Furious, late war fit. I want to make her as she appeared in her 1944 raids against german shipping around Norway.
I've found photos of her camouflage scheme for port & stbd sides but need info on what the colours were please? I've also seen photos which seem to show her with a camouflaged flight deck? any info on patterns/colours of that would be very welcome too!

TIA

Steve

I purchased the Kagero TopDrawings #127 for the British Aircraft Carrier HMS Furious. After I examined the drawings for the ship's final state, I had some concerns so I looked into the primary source materials with the help of several experts. What I found was that according to the issues of the Admiralty's C.B. 01815B from October 1943 to October 1945 - the half-yearly return of Particulars of War Vessels - the armament of HMS Furious during this period was twelve 4-inch guns in six twin mounting, thirty-two 2-pounders in four 8-barrel mountings, eight 20-mm guns in four power-operated twin mountings, and seven 20-mm guns on seven hand-operated single mountings. The author/draftsman shows six 8-barrel pom-poms, six twin power-operated 20-mm mountings, and nine single 20-mm mountings. This is manifestly incorrect and casts doubt on the rest of his presentation.

Norman Ough model of HMS Glorious is well photographed. Modellmarine has a good gallery of that fantastic model.

Under normal conditions when not undertaking flight operations Furious's furnace effluents exhausted through vents on either side on the flight deck well aft. During flight operations, the exhaust system was switched using valves to vents on the side of the hanger near the stern. What happened to the vents on the flight deck? Was there some kind of system that closed them off so that the wheels of aircraft landing did not become entangled?

Any information much appreciated.

Gcj,

No doubt Ough's model is now in need of TLC and understandably, model ship restoration is not prominent profession. I therefore doubt if the FAAM has anyone devoted to the work. Your best and probably now, only bet, is to consider a visit to the NMM. I suggest that you contact it first to establish what they have and take it from there.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum (FAAM) has a large model of HMS GLORIOUS that was built by the famous model-maker Norman A Ough. They may be able to help you with digital photographs of the areas of the ship that you are interested in. Otherwise your best bet will be the Historic Photographs and Ships Plans section at the National Maritime Museum (NMM). They should have her "as fitted" drawings and possibly a number of photographs. If you live in the UK the FAAM and NMM would be worth a visit: the NMM, of course, by prior arrangement.

Thanks, I keep forgetting about Ough's model and I only live 20 minutes from the FAAM. Actually last time I visited the model was looking rather sad with some losses and in need of some TLC. Needless to say the photos I took dont help - the problems of low light shooting through perspex. So another trip beckons.

Wont help on the quaterdeck much as the model is pre 35 refit.

On the other hand
iangazeley thank you. Best photo of the quarterdeck I have seen. I shall have fun interpretting that. Interesting to note the wooden planking extends all the way to the rear elevator

Looking for some information on the ready use ammunition lockers for the 4.7” HA on HMS Glorious. I am slogging my way through the Triumph Model’s kit and think the ready use ammunition lockers for the bow and stern pairs of 4.7” lack detail, and I want to check their location. I have been searching through various photos with plenty of pictures of these guns but for the bow pair only 1 photo of Courageous seems to show such lockers (which look similar to the small and medium lockers used for 4” HA on other RN ships) but the photo isn’t exactly clear. All the other photos I have seen are quite detailed but don’t seem to show anything that could be a ready use locker. I have drawn a complete blank on the stern pair. Anyone able to help please? Looking for 1938 fit but all info gratefully received.

Images of the upcoming Triumph Glorious. Apologies I can not give credit to the builder as I did not get their name.

Good eye Tim! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: I didn't make that out by looking at the photo. So, I think I'll be adding a v-grooved deck to my Courageous. Thank you again!

Courageous' quarterdeckwas planked (see, for example, https://i2.wp.com/www.destinationsjourn ... ous-18.jpg). Not sure about the level above, but from this photo, that also seems to be planked. Note that the configuration of the two sisters differed after Glorious' 1934-35 refit, when her quarterdeck, and the two 4.7" HA gunds, were raised one level (the revised arrangement appears to be the one represented in the Triumph kit - Courageous never had this alteration, nor the extended flight deck visible in the Triumph photos).

I saw that the Triumph 1940 Glorious kits very aft deck was planked? If so, would Courageous be the same as well??
