Offhand, the only source I know of is from a Hara Shobo volume, but I'm not certain how extensive those are. Otherwise, we have only what researchers and modelers have prepared.

Yes to one cable wrapped entirely around the ship. Technically, that's actually not true. It's a bunch of cables tucked together, often bundled within a metal box sheath. Attached to the hull using brackets, as per the illustration below.

Every ship or class differs in exactly how it was positioned on the hull. Generally, it was high on the hull, trying to follow the contours of the main deck. Depending on how tall a sponson or support was, the cable would either wrap under it, or warp over it. IN Shoho (and presumably Zuiho)'s case, it looks like they went over.

Ah. Now it all makes sense! Thanks! I wish they'd included a turned brass version of the boom, but the PE part may give the right effect.

Earlier in the thread you posted a photo of Shoho showing the degaussing cable. Thanks for that. Is there just one per ship? Or is there a cable on each side? On the photo it looks like it is level on the sides of the ship all the way, but that it must wrap around the protrusion for the AA mountings. Any ideas if it just stays level going around those, or does it drop down below the protrusions? I don't know how these were held in place really....

That's the boat boom and the access platform. There's one on each side. When stowed, it rested upon some posts projecting from the hull. When in use, it extended perpendicular to the hull at 90*.

There is a structure on the right side of the hull below the funnel. There are stairs leading down to a platform, then something behind the platform - I don't know what that is. I'm not sure whether knowing would help me know how to fold it, but I thought I'd ask. The parts are MA39 and MA47. MA 39 is the platform and its railing, but there is a part extending behind that MA47 gets combined with somehow. Here is the instruction sheet courtesy Hobby Search Japan. The two photographs showing it are side-by-side middle right.

I reviewed the online images of the instructions to no avail. I suspect there is conflicting information about the size of the markings, and both options were included.

Zuiho in Dec 1942 appears to have the wider version, but this is half a year later.

There are two PE choices, a shallow one and a deep one. The three decals are one for each of those choices, and one for if you stick with the plastic version. I can't find any indication of how to make the choice between the two different depths of the PE.

Apparently, the leading edge/portion of that array has a solid surface, and one set of strips goes on top.

I'm guessing that one width applies to the PE version; the other to the kit plastic version. (image courtesy of Hobbysearch Japan).

Dan, it's the Hasegawa hyper detail set. Looking at the kit there are actually three decals of different sizes with the red and white strips. I didn't go figure out whether there are three PE sizes yet, the instructions say there are two.

Those ladders are known as accommodation ladders, and were made primarily of wood in the IJN. They were collapsible, in that the stanchions and chain rails folded down and inward. In the Shohos, there were two sets forward and aft. The forward set was stored on the walkways above, the aft set stored on the stern boat deck.

Those landing light arrays or outriggers carried landing lights on the trailing edge to help guide pilots into the landing path. Which PE set?

The "Sea Stairs" can be either a rope and wood affair that can be rolled up and stored on deck or in a nearby locker or it will be metal and/or wood and steel device that is hinged at the upper (deck) end. The steel version may be raised to deck level and secured if transiting short distances in calm seas, otherwise it will be raised aboard and stored somewhere out of the way, usually on the main deck area.

I was a little discouraged by the flight deck situation, but I'm back at it. I'll figure something out for the flight deck.

Going through all the PE I now have and figuring it out. I have two questions:

1) "sea stairs" - I'm not sure what the right term is for these, but they are the stairs that comes down the side of the ship with a small ramp at sea level for someone boarding via a boat. Anyway, what happens to them when the ship is underway? Are they completely taken in, or just raised up to the level of the deck where the top of the stairs are, or what?

2) "flight deck wings" - again, not sure what the right term is for these, but they are the wing like things sticking out to each side at the back of the flight deck. I have two options on finishing them - there are two solid pieces of PE that sit on top of the assembly, one deeper than the other, and it says optional. I have no idea what the difference between the two are. I'd like any guidance about those.

Flyhawk typically designs for the specific kit, so, it's unlikely to fit. But, you never know.

Does anybody know if Flyhawk replacement deck for Shoho works only with Hasegawa kit (as designed) or is good also for the newer and better Fujimi kit?

Thx for the heads-up. I'm curious as to what they think will improve on the Hasegawa kit. Probably not the flight deck planking..............., not that the raised lines of the Hasegawa flight deck are such a joy.

Fujimi to release a new mold of the Zuiho, slated for December, 2014. Hasegawa's current mold of this carrier dates to 1999 or so. Fujimi release will be circa 1944.
