Post subject:  USS Kirk (FF-1087) from Orange Hobby 1/350 Robert E. Peary k  Reply with quote
I used Orange Hobby's 1/350 resin kit to make a model of the USS Kirk (1087) as she appeared 1979-81 when I served on her.

Scratch modifications:
- Removed "hurricane" bow bulwarks
- added helo blade storage boxes
- added 2 SATCOM antennas (bases & tower are kit-supplied)
- added HF coupler and "fence" aft of GFCS director

After-market additions:
- HF whip antennas
- Propeller
- ASROC & SRBOC Launchers, SLQ-32 antennas, signal lamp, big-eye binoculars (all from Veteran models)
- PE fire stations and life rings
- some decals

This kit has some of the best cast on detail I've seen. The PE is extensive and complicated. The drawings are crisp but do not show assembly steps for the PE so some study and forethought is required because it is too delicate to allow re-bending. A PE bending tool is a big help.

I recently completed BlueJacket Shipcrafters' 1/192 scale Gearing FRAM I kit as the USS Basilone (DD-824) as she appeared during her 1966 World Cruise.
I posted some photos over in the Completed Ship Models section of the Photo section under the title "1/192 scale Gearing FRAM I DD". I can recommend the kit, it builds into a nice display model straight out of the box and the scale lends itself to as mush scratch detailing as you could want to do. BJ makes another version of the kit in the WWII rig.

gtbrd,

I just bought the Orange Knox also and will start on it as soon as I finish my Orange PHM. Would really appreciate any pix you could post as you go along.

That Mack PE does look like a nightmare, a build over on the Steel Navy site gallery recommended reinforcing with some strip plastic.

I'll be building the Kirk (1087) as she was in the early 80's when I was on her so I will have to remove the hurricane bow and scratch the anchor bolster.
Looking at the kit directions I can see the need to add the following:
- The 3 ECM domes on top of the mack, apparently forgotten by Orange although the mounting holes are there
- Glide slope indicator on top of the hangar
- UHF Satcom antennas, one on the bridge face and the other on the hanger roof (Orange has provided the "tower" for it though)
- ready service/pyro lockers
- wood bridge rail caps

Working on the Mack is a pain. It has a very complex p.e. set.

I have finally finished the other two warships of the same class that had commissioned. F75 Extremadura and F74 Asturias.
As you can see the degree of wheathering is different in the three models.
I hope you like.

Very cool conversion! These photos are a very good reference to do the conversion oneself.

Hi Guys,
That is a masterpiece !
Just wonderful!
Now, I can see all of the differences between the US version and the way they looked once in use by the Spanish Navy.
WOW, that is one very fine piece of work! It makes me want to get back to work on my stalled 1/96 project. No matter what scale a modeler may prefer, to take a look at Fran's work here is one to behold.
Thanks for sharing your excellent work!
Happy Easter!

Hello, this is my little tribute to this class of ships that served in the Spanish navy.
I'm currently building three of these ships on time, this is the F72 AndalucĂa, a gift for my brother who served in 90s.

Hope you like it.

Fran.
