From the side, the revised masts are just narrower in their fore and aft stance. From overhead, the yardarms are shaped like a squat "X" instead of a single crossbar. I had to use one rod over the other for the yardarms.
To illustrate, attached is a side illustration of Nowaki's mainmast (Kagero class), which was identical to the early Yugumos (just 2 or 3) and an illustration of an Akizuki class mainmast, which was identical to those of the latter Yugumos.
HTH. If not, ask away.

Hello guys,
as a follow-up to Dan's fantastic reviews of Hasegawa's Yugumo class kits, would it be possible to provide a comparison of photos or plans of initial and modified aft mainmast? The differences were explained rather explicitly in the review, but I still can't picture it in my head to replicate a revised mast using brass rods.

Hello Dan, thank you for the explanation with the halyards und their connecting points. Your knowledge of IJN ships and helpfulness is most appreciated. Thanks again!!! So, over the next three or four years I'll try to replicate Yugumo's rigging.... When (if...) i'm done with the rigging I'll post some pics of how everything worked gut. Cheers Alex

You're most welcome, Ed.
A further elaboration on the halyards running from the middle yardarms. Those are the ones with 3 sets per side, swept back, etc.
The front line of the halyard is attached at point B, but it looks like the rear portion of the line runs into the flag bags to either side of that extended, open platform at the rear of the bridge.

I am going to try and simplify this for you, Alex. My original explanation was getting too convoluted, so I've scrapped most of the diagrams I intended to use. In that same vein, I'm using the Miyukikai plan illustrations for the Kagero class instead of the the Yugumos. Their setups were identical, but the Miyukikai plan set for Yugumo makes it appear very complicated.
Study the illustrations and feel free to ask for clarification. Basically, the lowest yard arm has 4 sets of halyards per side that run to what I labeled point "A" on each side of the bridge in the Makanami photo, and the middle set of yardarms (which are adjustable and swept back and up) has 3 sets of halyards per side that run to attachment points B in the same photo. Know that these lines run BEHIND and UNDER the lowest yardarm down to attachment point B.
It's made more difficult to execute well because it's in 1/700 scale.
The shorter, upper yardarm has only one set of halyards per side that runs down. It's used mostly for aerial antennas that run fore and aft.

Hello all,
ist's me again with another question: can anybody tell me (or even better: provide a picture or part of a plan) how the halyards of the forward mast were connected to the bridge???
I've seen some fotos of this particular area, but all of those were more or less unclear or blurry.
(Sorry, I wanted to show some fotos of my model, but I just can't figure out, how to post pics here)
Cheers
Alex

Each set has instructions that layout what class/ship get which grill. It's pretty straightforward.

I've always wondered about these funnel grill sets. There are four versions. How do you know which set goes to which ship? Thanks.

If that doesn't work out, Rainbow makes a fret of cruiser grills that includes Takao class grills:

Hello Dan, thank you for the explanation. And your're totally right, first I'll try to produce the grills with brass mesh. This should hone my skill in working with PE. Cheers Alex

None of the Yugumos, or any of the first class DDs that wasn't in the yards for major repair, was likely to have gained a bandstand in front of the bridge with AA before early 1943. Yugumo had a short interval in the yards in early January, 1943, and a much longer stay in and around Yokosuka in May. She received the platform during one of these visits, and I suspect May more likely. Btw, I'm very glad to hear that my build was of some use to you. I'll see what I have in the way of funnel grills, but know that you could make them out of brass mesh, as i did with Chokai. Looks very much like a purpose-formed Takao class grill. FWIW.

Greetings to all, again I have a question regarding Yugumo's AA-outfit: did Yugumo have a AA-platform in front of her bridge or not? In the TROM I couldn't find any information about a major overhaul. But in some builds here (e.g. Dan K.'s fabulous example back in 2013; BTW thank you for the inspiration and the help this build gives me! ) the platform is there. Or are only some ships of that class outfitted like that?? Thank you and happy modelling Alex P.S.: I'm looking for some spare PE funnel grills for a 1/700 Takao-class cruiser. If somebody has some, and is willing to share und send them to Germany, that would be great!!! I will refund any costs....

Good evening everyone,
as I'm an avid reader on this forum, and knowledge here is really extreordenary, I hope that someone can give me an answer. Currently, I'm building "Yugumo" (Hasegawa #461), and I wonder, what her AAA-outfit was like in late August 1942 (I like to depict her with Atago on route to Truk)? Mostly regarding her AAA on the platform aft of the main funnel. Did she have double-, or tripple-25mm??
Thank you for your help!!!
Regards Alex

Well, since he stated 1945 to start with, I'm guessing it's for the Ten-Ichi Go sortie in April. I'd agree with Kure Grey. This refit was only 2 months prior to the sortie.

That, and because I don't know what exact date you want to depict her. The further out from her February docking period, the greater the possibility that she picked up paints from a different source that might have been something other than Kure Grey, and the greater the possibility she repainted in those stocks (even outside of a major IJN port).
