Topic review - USS Pensacola CA-24 Scratch Build 1/350

This looks fantastic, that hull has very nice lines and you captured them well! To me, the most impressive thing in modelling is people who scratch-build hulls and get all those curves looking perfect. I will be watching this :thumbs_up_1:

Thanks Steve and Bill.

No real progress. Cast some bases for the turrets, and started to sort out the drawings for the superstructure. Still very lacking in information on the time frame that I want. I just ordered a 1/200 card model today that was suggested to me by "Haijun watcher" on the Cruiser board so maybe that will be of some help.

Mostly been super busy at the office and also trying to get a new video out on a timely basis.

Beautiful work, Paul. I wish you lived close enough for me to watch you work and learn first hand how to do this.

Any progress on this? I'm planning a 700 scale Pensacola build.

Devin:
Some of both. After initial shaping of the hull, I had to add stuff here and there till it looked right (at least to me). The deck (except for the forecastle) is evergreen scribed siding, the bilge keels, rudder, and parts of the spine from the keel to the stern are styrene. I don't particularly enjoy doing it this way (adding, taking away, filling holes...looked pretty ugly at times) but the two sets of drawing I have only have 15 stations and some of stations will leave you wondering if whoever drew them ever built a ship. I sort of figure that they were taken off much more detailed drawings and someone just couldn't read them correctly and didn't bother to analyze what they drew. If so, I would have loved to have the originals. But your right, it does have nice lines..thank you.

Paul,

Nice lines on that hull. Is that wood with sealer, or styrene?

hypno 7: The hull is a lot of eyeball. I have the Floating Drydock plans for the Salt Lake City, but a number of the lines just don't make sense and the Profile Morskie drawing is just a redu of the Floating Drydock hull sections. So I had the profile and plan view and I had to fill in a lot of blanks.

PetrolGator: It was the first of the Treaty Heavy Cruisers with an unusual main battery and I like the lines. Having very light armor, it survived the war with a stellar record most likely due to good ship handling and some good luck. And, cruisers are my favorites. Also...most likely won't wind up in an injection kit.

VERY interesting subject. Why the Pensacola? I ask simply because I have a lot of family in the area.

Very beautiful hull Paul! I look forward on seeing the progress. Did you use the same method for the hull as you did for Enterprise?

Knowing your work and research on other topics posted online, I am pretty sure you already have these pictures, but hey... (close to Midway, not so many online):

Of course there are many others, but mostly from late war or before the war. There is also a very expensive CD & book that contains many photos (WWII Cruise book). I have not seen it, so I cannot say anything about it.
