I think your deck came out great! It really stands out! Are you going with photoech 20's or the Fine Mold ones? I have yet to try cutting out the notch on the tops of the Fine Mold shields. Bob Pink.

Chris,
It's really starting to look like a BB - very good job! I think the small details & PE will enhance this kit.

Life's been busy but I've been able to finish painting the 16"/50's and some of the bridge railing. Aft superstructure is painted and all major components have been given a nice wash and dry brush. I've still got a lot to do. I'm hoping to proceed with the 5" secondary guns sometime this weekend and get the 40mm's built. Once that's done I'll move on to the rangefinders and any other equipment that can be painted as a smaller module. Sadly, the pictures make the wash difficult to see: Note that I've 90% hand painted this, minus the hull. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Update: Wood deck has been placed and I've added some deck fittings to the main hull. The bridge has been constructed by completing PE and/or parts that would be made seriously difficult if the upper decks were attached. I'm effectively moving up on the main bridge, adding railing when needed. Range fingers, AA guns, etc will be added later. I'm trying to minimize the breakable bits on this thing as of now. The first funnel IS missing, thanks to a puppy. Thankfully, I snatched the piece before she got any resin in her belly. At any rate, pictures. Paint isn't perfect, but I'm still correcting and I need to get this done for Brandon sometime this year. There's enough in this box to keep a detail nut busy for an entire year.

File comment: I based this off the Washington bridge. Time constraints have prevented me from going my usual overboard on this.

I use scotch tape and "de-tack" it by sticking it down on a clean part of the table first before applying it to the model.

I honestly don't get it. I cleaned the hell out of that hull with Bleche White -and- soapy water to remove any release agent. Thankfully, the second paint application stuck well enough.

There is also different "grades" of blue painter tape - you have to make sure you get the version that is the least tacky. I think it's the one with the orange label. Note: NEVER USE BLUE PAINTER'S TAPE ON MODELS. Ugh. Stripped all the side paint in chunks. I had to clean the hull and redo. It blew. Still, fixed it. Sadly, the only PE I managed to finish were some ladders on three of her 16" turrets. I've also thrown on the 18" and 20" guns, just because. Overall, this has been a self-imposed frustrating build. The model itself is pretty good, but I keep making stupid mistakes. Note that I've got one more layer on the wood. I'll throw one more enamel filter on it, I think. I'll then mask (fearfully) and paint the forward and aft metal decks. HOPEFULLY, this'll result in an attached wood deck and, lord willing, some weathering on the hull. Hopefully. I'll then begin working on the after superstructure, detail wise. Attachment:

She's looking great man! MM's USN colors are all semi-gloss/satin for some reason; acrylic and enamel.

I've restarted work on this ship. The hull and major superstructure bits got a coat of paint, but in the process revealed some flaws from my sanding that I absolutely had to correct. ...so back to the paint drawing board. I'll resand the hull and hit it again with 5-H. Once that dries, I'll paint the bottom part 5-N as per Measure 22. Other issues that must be corrected: - My little scratch built platform around the armored citadel looks like crap. I need to completely resand, reputty, and fix this. Ugh. - Other tiny splotches. MM's USN colors are slightly glossy and small imperfections bother me. I'll fix what I can. Neat discovery: Apparently, thinned enamel makes for a good stain on the wood deck provided. I still have need of a few layers, but it'll stain the deck nicely and still look like wood. Win-win. I loathe this stage in the process. The first layer of paint on major sections always reveals problems. Attachment:

I've been trying to get my San Francisco off the desk. Between issues with my water base (solved) and a ton going on in life, I haven't done a lot with this ship. I'm planning to spend some time time tonight getting the main hull primed and possibly painted. Once this is done I can start tacking on the superstructure.

Chris,
Just received the MONTANA set of plans from TFD - 4 or 5 sheets reprinted from the official drawings - not all in great condition, but usable. Very interesting to see the 1/16" scale drawings - it IS a massive ship and would make an excellent 1:200 or 1:192 scale model. The main deck plan is not included, but a sheet with various decks shown in plan in smaller scale are included (main deck also), just not a larger scale, detailed plan as I would have liked.
How is your model coming along?

Chris,
Looks real good - esp. with the additional details!
I really wish one of the PE manufacturers would come out with a 1:200 scale sheet of general bulkhead/hull fittings for U.S. ships that could be used universally.
Your approach on this kit is the right approach seeing how BRM is partner in this build.

Chris, Enjoying this build, I too think that the open bridge looks cool. All the extra PE your adding to this monster is really eye catching, I would love to add a few of these to my BB collection and most likely will at a later date, I look forward to more progress on this ship, and will follow with great interest.
