Coming along nicely. How is the kit PE to work with?

JT,
Your Yorktown is looking good. I am enjoying following along with the blow by blow comments of this build and look forward to future post. I wish that I was building one along with you.

Thank you Gabriel, you honor me.

Attached the kit supplied brass anchor chain at the bow. First time using such chains, was glad they were easy to cut.

Overall view of the ship and dry fitting of the hanger deck. Fitment issues seem to only be around the 5/38 galleries, with the rest fitting together quite well. I also test fitted the flight deck as well, which currently has excellent placement when applied. I hope it stays that way

Oddly enough some of these issues are similar to the fit issues I had on the Hornet kit. Likewise the fixes I had look similar to yours. One would think they would have addressed those. Either way your implementation is better looking than mine by far.

Thanks Martin, glad I can fix some of the gaps, since theres quiet a bit now that I get further into the kit. This kit is challenging if a single part is misaligned, theres tons of stuff that will also be off.

Aft flight deck support in place, test fitted using the overhead beam piece as a guide.
Image

Fast forward a little bit. Here we found a issue with the flight deck support beams. Notice the port side piece next to the railing from the near platform. The beams are supposed to fit between these rails on both sides of the ship, but thats not working.
Image

My solution was to cut out that side railing thats place next to the beam. Why would a rail be needed there anyways when the beam is there? Come on Merit. Heres what I did to the railings, with the port side finished, and the starboard side in progress. Once this was finished, the beam supports fit well.
Image

Next on the fitment correction tab. A good reason why parts should be dry fitted beforehand. For this starboard forward 5/38 gallery, notice the tab sticking out instead of lining up with the wall (2nd to last porthole). To correct this, I decided to cut that size tab into the deck of the gallery. I thought it was a clever solution.
Image

Wrong. Was too busy trying to get the tab to fit to notice the part lining up.
Image

Solution was to cut out the rear tab, which I should have done instead of the front. Here's the piece now
Image

And the new fitment. Much better! The port side gallery isn't as bad.
Image

Also did a dry fit of the flight deck, which seems to fit very well. That was surprising.

Yeah - it's expected that fit issues would be corrected, even if it's out of the box

Models will be judged for skill in construction, finish, realism, and accuracy. Additional criteria are considered for special categories such as dioramas, collections, conversions, and triathlon. Models are judged as three-dimensional objects and are examined in all aspects.

SHIPS - Basic Construction
Flash, mold seams, sink marks, ejector-pin marks, and similar molding flaws eliminated.
Seams filled.
Contour errors corrected.
Ship configuration correct for the time period being depicted by the model.
Alignment:
Superstructure components (platforms, cabins, funnels, etc.) aligned with the vertical when viewed from stem to stern.
Masts parallel to the vertical axis of the ship when viewed from stem to stern. Rake of masts uniform, unless the real vessel's masts had varying rake angles. Rigging tension must not cause the masts and spars to bend.
Cylindrical cross-section of gun barrels and masts (if applicable) maintained.
Glue marks removed.

Not sure yet, I'll probably run some test on some extra trumpeter lower hulls that I have lying around. Want to see what it looks like after a clear coat. Hoping I dont have to sand it down

I know in the future I'll probably just stick with a fine primer like Tamiya. I was low so I used something I got at Home Depot, which had previously worked fine with a few minor exceptions. Its just not fine enough, or requires more work to get a perfect finish.

TJ, how do you plan on fixing the paint/primer issue? I have run into that same problem a few times in the past, but never figured out how to correct it except sanding it down or basically starting over with easy off.

Okay, time for a 5 month update. Last week I visited the USS Hornet CV-12 museum in Alameda, CA. Spent several hours wandering around, and eyeing several excellent models. Naturally, I have more inspiration to work on this kit!

I really like 90% of the hull painting, came out really well. However, the black waterline paint didn't turn out well, so I decided to re-do it. It fixed some issues, but created others. Ive applied touch ups, and hoping a final flat coat will resolve any issues. Then while painting the hanger deck walls, had a primer issue that caused the surface to be very rough, and didn't realize it until after applying the Ocean Grey. Now im fixing that while dry-fitting major pieces.

Finding some more minor fitment issues. I need to look at my local IPMS rules for OOB and see if I can fill that in.

Started placing the small bits at the stern. God I hate this things...

A nice view of the whole ship

I'll update again in week or so, as I'll be traveling until the 20th.

Nice work.

It's good to see the boot topping goes right along one of the plating lines, that'll be good reference for those of us cutting her down to waterline.

Cheers gents.

The hull is finally done with spraying, will need a bit of touch ups around the black line (little red is noticeable above).

Thanks for sharing your work and frustration with the PE railings. What you have done is noteworthy. Maybe the aftermarket guys will come up with something better PE wise than the kit PE. I have this kit and it is on the list, but now the 1/200 Arizona occupies my time.
I'm glad you posted and I look forward to your updates on this model.

Those funnel railings were just as ugly using aftermarket on the CV-8. Although the engineering was not the issue. It was the kindergarten level drawings they used for the instructions. You on the other hand I applaud. Your work result is very good.

Thank you for the info you have shared on your OOB build!!! It will be invaluable to the rest of us who are planning different approaches to building this kit! :worship_1:

I see you have run into the same type of difficulties as me. I should have had the hull sanded smooth by now, but the Indy races at Barbers Motor Speedway, work/friends/life/etc recently, all seem to interject themselves at the most in-opportune moments.

I will be posting some pics of a sanded hull very soon the the Merit Yorki Hull thread soon (hopefully)!!! But......

I use a Pentax K-3 with a 18-135mm lens on a tripod, and shoot on a timer so I can have a longer shutter to get more detail :)

Little progress and have been rather busy. With our local IPMS show in April, I spent much more time on my model cars and the ship, mainly because those were nearly finished and could be in time for the show. Also have 2 different weeks when I was out of state. So lots of time lost. Now I have a bit of time to keep working until Mid-June. The hull has been primered and will be painted over the next week and a half. Once thats done I can get the hanger deck going well. Heres some shots of the hull and gap filling.

One area I ran into trouble was the forward railing that cuts into the front of the what I think are the exhaust funnels. The directions on mention 1 piece of railing is used, but in reality that single piece is not long enough. After doing a bit of research, I found a picture of Merit's built model shows they used a different railing around the spot lights. Wish the instructions could tell me what to use, but alas, thats something I'll have to figure out later.

Image

Also worth noting, the top railing to the funnels is terrible. You're supposed to be the struts downwards and attach to the funnel cover. Good idea, except in this case, the struts are strong that the rail itself, so every time I attempted to bend a strut downwards, the entire rail became bent and twisted. This single rail took me about 2 weeks to complete due to lack of patience and frustration.

Great looking build so far. I don't do much 1/350 but I love the Yorktown so I am watching this build with interest. I may have to grab one of these for myself!!
