Can't be of any help, sorry, but...
... is it just me or do the two blokes in the skylight photo, looking at the famous mark, bear similarities to Murdoch and Smith from Titanic?
Happy modelling ~ Olaf!

Re: ... to the Beauty of a victorian Victory :-) |

Since the start of this project I was extensively searching for traces of this version of the Victory and I found 3 to 4 dozen good photographs and drawings that slowly give an impression of the state of the outer hull. Mostly from postcards - I already managed to get hand on some interesting copies - but also through some original photographs. One of those someone managed to snap away just from under my nose on ebay - should have hear me cursing! If it was one of the readers of this lines here then I would swap all those curses with all my heart into "best friend mode" to get a scan of the picture More difficult to define are the head and the deckw especially the forecastle. The small houses seem to have been added and changed by time, not making things easier. On the first picture the small hut was not build yet. Only a big skylight is established. Here the hut appears still smaller than in later times, the big chimney is missing, but the small one is there as the are the boxes (?) and the small companion way. Good for orientation is the start of the hammock boxes and the last fore shroud. Nice to see the round bow and the hammocks running around the forecastle. This picture is a good reference as it is quite good to fix the date and the final version of the changes. It appears that behind the hut still can be seen some parts of the skylight of the first picture? Also could it be that the small companion way is overbuild by the hut? The small chimney looks to be still in place. The small hut on the poop - what was the purpose? And nice to see the coat of armes and the octagonal skylight. Closeup of the skylight, fits well the photography. View towards the bows with Nelson´s barque situated off center. It looks to have a bulkhead at the forecastle. The boxes for the hammocks give an approx. idea where this could be situated, could be near the foremost shroud. Perhaps this also would explain the position of the camera in the first two shots, which is about eye level with someone standing on the poop Two more interesting finds: There was at one point enlarged hammock boxes on the waist, but I do not think that this state is relevant for my build, as before and after - see the dry dock picture of 1920 - does not show it. Apparently this could have been the tender for the Vic. Any deeper informations about this one? And now my big question: [orange] Who knows pictures, drawings, plans or other information about the Vic at those days, especially about the decks, and the head? Also interesting are contemporaries that sufferd an equal fate, as the constructions were often in the same style[/orange] Cheers and many thanks, Daniel

Many of the most brilliant people of all time were a bit "off their knocker"... Like I always say (starting right now, anyway ) If you're gonna loose it, go for full tilt! Seriously though, interesting idea, Dafi. In the deep recesses of my head I have a crazy, hazy semi-plan to do a 1/96 prison hulk diorama out of one of these Heller Kits... I think showing a ship like the Victory in a less than glamorous state makes for a very interesting display piece, especially if it was next to a pristine version in original fit. Looking forward to more, Dafi!

Your clinical insanity is an inspiration to us all, dafi. I hope for your sake it is a 'fast' build.

Dear Goodwood, to be honest, knowing the original Vic-version, already the 1803 striped version was a bad mutilation - and still everybody is building this one And Jim - thank you a lot for the picture, I have it in a worse resolution so it is a great update! Now it confirmed that even though usually being labelled "Victory" it is not, my personal believe to be the Wellington. If one looks around, there are loads of pictures of the empire attitude of the Victory, but only a few in a useful resolution, those ones I am seeking still. Here is one that confirmed some interesting bits, that I already guessed in other pictures: And very surprisingly - there are no whales and the hull is planked flush, no curve to be seen. No profiles to structure the surface, only thin battens as a split line for the color change, and this one follows exactly the line of the gun ports - not very elegant ... Ok- and I already believed that this could be a fast build. ... ... so I made a dummy .... ... and filled in all the well known artifacts of the original planking. Oh my dears, DAniel

What on earth could have possessed them to mutilate such a beautiful ship in such a fashion?

The Empire strikes back! |
 |
|
For a long time already, she was turning around in my head - the empire Vic of 1910. Matchless in her appearance, she started to fascinate me as soon as I saw the first picture of this state some 30 years ago. By now I collected enough good pictures to have a good understanding of her hull and stern. Also the aft assemblies I get a clearer idea, even Nelson´s barque is already parked underneath the poop deck. Still looking for some high resolution pictures of the bow and the fo´castle, also those of contemporary ships, as this is a very outrageous design there So it is like in the sales: Everything has to go! ...hihihihihihihihi... As the lower deck of my other Victory will definitely still will take some time - in the Year 2525 - here a small in between meal. The usual start-up picture - everything as it is known to be Where will this lead to? To a face, that only a mama is being able to adore - or a dafi ...hihihihihihihi...
