Nice build, and hope you can help me out when mine makes it to the bench. I have been looking for instructions, photos, clear drawings of the SK radar. When you deal with 1/700 PE you may get a second chance. Got any suggestions?
Again nice build, and you may want to tone your colors down a wee bit. They seemed dark in all your photos.

Since all I really have left is finishing up the details on the water/wake, I am going to go ahead and call this one finished. I really enjoyed doing this work in progress and I hope you enjoyed looking at it. I enjoyed it so much that I will definitely be doing another WIP thread on a project in the near future. I should have this one ready to post to the completed thread within a few days. Thanks, Mike. :wave_1:

Second part of the base is done now. Should be ready to start painting tomorrow and then time to work on the details of the wake.

I have her mounted and have phase 1 of the sea base done. I used some acrylic modeling paste that was thinned with water and brushed on for the beginnings of the wake. Still needs some adjusting and then when dry, painting, and then some cotton to improve the wake area.

Very clean build! The 3D model parts guns really look amazing! You have done a stunning work considering it is 1/700!

Finished up some touch up work and added a spray of dull-cote on her. The ship is pretty much done and I am now working on the sea base. I got her mounted on the base (after I took the picture) and will begin working on the sea tonight.

Mike, thanks for the info on Carl. I'll hit him up for sure. I don't know squat about the technical limits of 3-D printing, but just from a logical standpoint it would seem it would be a simple matter of scaling up the process.

Absolutely no need to thank me for my comments on your Indy. You're doing a great job with her and that isn't idle praise, which I don't hand out. I just think first rate work should be acknowledged. I know from personal experience that knowing that people with the same interests as we have appreciate what you are doing is something that is meaningful to any of us who put our hearts into our hobby. I simply believe in acknowledging that when I see it. You've earned every positive comment that has been posted. I hope you do give the Indy a shot in 1/350. I can't render an opinion on Trumpeter's offering, but from what little work I've been able to do so far on the Academy kit, combined with my inspection of the various parts trees, it looks like she can be built into a real show piece, especially with a good upgrade set. I have the FlyHawk super detail set and just on inspection it looks first rate.

And Mike, happy Independence Day! I've always felt that it doesn't get the respect and reverence it deserves. As I suspect most of us here appreciate, it is about a great deal more than fireworks, burgers on the grill and cold beer. Sorry, I tend to get a little preachy about the subject.

Bob, Carl from 3dmodelparts is a member of this forum. I think his contact info is on the 3dmodelparts going upscale thread under manufacturers. Shoot him a message and maybe they can work on putting together some 3D 1/350 twin 20's. I love the Indy and have been thinking of doing the 1/350 version of her. If they had some 1/350 twin 20's, I know I would buy them. Hope this helps and thanks for the kind words. Mike.

Timmy, thanks for pointing out the 1/700 scale twin 20mm Oerlikons. I'm sure that those will be well received by those building in that scale. Unfortunately, their on line catalogue does not include, at least at this point, a 1/350 version. I have scoured the site, evening opening up my account with them, and have been unable to find a way to contact the company to inquire if these may be something we can expect to see in the future. The only provision for contacting them that I could find was for the sole purpose of inquiring as to the status of an order.

Since they are a sponsor of this site and forum I am hopeful that they keep an eye on things here, or that someone with a relationship with them may relay inquiries and/or requests of this nature on to the appropriate folks there. I appreciate that there may be some technical reason that the twin mounts may not be doable in 1/350, but I am hopeful that this would be a relatively simple matter of scaling up. I suspect that sales of the 1/350 Indianapolis kits has been fairly brisk and I would therefore think that there would be a solid market for the twin mounts in that scale.

So, keeping my fingers crossed,

Bob M.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread about this beautiful example of a 1/700 U.S.S. Indianapolis.

I remember about 15 years ago when this kit came out, everyone raved about the secondaries. Now compared to the 3D Modelparts they seem very bleh. Great looking build so far.

Unfortunately, and believe me, I have searched the internet for them, no vendor of 3-D printed after market armaments yet produces twin Oerlikon 20 millimeter mounts in any scale. I have e-mailed a couple of them with the suggestion. I have just started on my 1/350 Academy Indy and have all of the secondary armament replaced with either resin of 3-D printed after market replacements - except the twin 20 mounts. Hopefully some 3-D designer will see this and come to our rescue as I'm sure I'm not the only modeler out there who would love to see this product.

Now, before I totally hijack this thread, let me compliment you, medicmike, on your 1/700 Indy. She looks great and makes me all the more eager to dive head first into mine. Your PE work is fantastic, especially at that scale. Your pictures make me remember what a beautiful ship she was. Can't wait to see the finished build. Great work!

Got started on the rigging today and should be able to finish it tomorrow. After the rigging, time to start on the floater net baskets.
