Inching towards the finish line... North Star figures painted and installed. Next step is hoist the ensign and then a final light coat of flat to remove any shiny spots. Once that's done, I'll have actually finished model for the first time in about a year (and the last one I finished was a tank - an Italeri 1/35 Tiger I P). Attachment:

The figures came out "alright"...I'd gotten to the point where I just wanted them done so I could finish this damn model, which I started a millennium ago (or so it seems). The other realization is that, when it comes to figures, less isn't necessarily more. They look ok, but it would probably look better with at least twice as many figures aboard. Oh well, live and learn. This will be the last update here. Next set of photos (whenever they are taken) will be submitted to the gallery. Thanks for following along this long and winding road. My life is completely different now than when I started this build. I appreciate the comments and the encouragement I received along the way.

That looks great Martin! Almost there… But I think the crew won't take too much time, and will be fun to install.
Enjoy the last little bits!

About a month shy of two years since I started, I finally finished the rigging today. Attachment:

Now I just have to paint her crew, put them on-board and then give her one last (very light!) coat of flat, and she will be done. Attachment:

Very nice looking build! I agree with you about the wood decks and the windbreaks giving a pleasing bit of color to what would otherwise be a nearly monotone look, save for the deck. Well done indeed. I have a couple of these German DD's in my stash and I hope they come out looking half that good!

It's been almost seven months since I posted anything in this thread. Holy Cow, time flies. I got hung up on the rigging, and frankly, after all the issues I had, I never got the motivation to take this kit to the finish line. I did pick up a set of NorthStar DKM figures for her, which I finally painted last night. In between working CV-11 and CC-3, I may start doing some work on this again. If I get some figures on board it may give me the impetus to finish the rigging and finally get her done. Attachment:

This is my first time using the NorthStar figures. I've painted them overall with a Humbrol blue. I guess I'll slice them off the casting wafer and start lightly picking out the faces and hands with a very light coat of flesh.

She looks really good. I like the bit o' color that the lifeline wind breaks and the natural wood on the boats give to break up the gray.

Wow...it's been over two months since I posted a photo. In that time, I've pretty much let Z-17 sit, with one exception - I did airbrush another coat of future in mid-November, which seemed to take care of MOST of the silvering. Since then, she's sat on a bookshelf. Attachment:

I did notice that the warp has pretty much corrected itself, and there is no discernible bend in the base. That's good news. Next step - when I get up the fortitude - is to airbrush a few lights coats of flat, and pray she doesn't silver again.

"Don't give up the ship!" It's just too good looking and too well built. Hopefully the solution will be easy and straight-forward. Maybe all this trouble will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
I had a hull seam pop on Saratoga the other day. In the words of Homer Simpson, "Doh!"
