This build is great! It's really giving me motivation to get back to my Arizona build. Mine doesn't have near the amount of scratch building and corrections, but this is making me question if I want to incorporate more into my builds. wish I had the skills and tools you have at your disposal! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your kind comment and your service Mark. Hopefully your Arizona was not damaged too much. Currently I am working on a number of builds and the Arizona is resting, at least until I finally talk myself into the further hull mods I want to make. I am not too far from sitting down and just finishing up the 5 inch guns and then the cranes.

I have been using the Pennsylvania for some reference as well. While there is a lot that is different (especially late war) There are details that help with doing the Arizona.

HI Paul:

I am just now getting to this post. I am humbled by your work. I am in the throes of repairing my 1/200 Arizona after it took a few blows in a move. Your work makes me want to toss the whole thing. Naturally, I won't, but your work is truly first rate and I am impressed by the level of detail you are willing to achieve. I will be watching and and hopefully learning and applying some of your techniques to my Pennsylvania build when I return to it.
Thanks for sharing your work.

Mark

Today is December 7th 2016. It is the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. My original intention was to have this build finished by today. Unfortunately the Trumpeter kit leaves a LOT to be desired. Thus while it isn't finished, it is still in the build cue. There is so much to do that I decided several months ago to do it right rather than to a deadline.

Let's take a moment today and remember those that gave their lives that day 75 years ago.

Thank your for your kind comments Randy and Jeff. They are most appreciated!

Jeff I think I know what you are talking about on the railings and other small details. At this point there is so - very - much - stuff that will need to be done that I just try to tackle a bit at a time. I believe I noticed those items you mentioned but it very much appreciated your pointing them out. Been on a bit of a hiatus the last couple of weeks. We moved at work to a new building that the owner just built. Relaxing and taking a bit of a break from all this. I have quite a number of things worked out in my head, but just don't have the zoom-zoom at the moment to do it.

Have just about talked myself into a heavy hull mod to round the lower sides of the torpedo blisters a little and relocate the long curved (not sure what they are called) fins along the sides to their proper places and more recessed with the hull not quite as square there.

Any more pointers and discrepancies pointed out are much appreciated. Lots more to do to just the cranes and then there is the rest of the story. A little encouragement Image can go a long way.

Of course there are the usual consequences. Image or Image

Hi Paul,
I was told I needed to check this one out. Glad I did! You're tugging at my heartstrings with this build.
I have a few detail observations as well about that boat crane. Notice how the railing does not terminate at the base of the arm. It actually continues around the platform. Also notice that rod or wire that is attached to the outside of the round platform and goes up to the arm about 1/4 way up. Then there is that detail behind the operator platform! I love this stuff. I've got a few more treats for you as you go along that I came across after I finished my kit. Have fun!

Paul,
You are "chugging" along just fine-great work! The photos are those I took during one of my many visits to the Texas.. What time frame are you modelling the Arizona? My build is depicting her 1-2 weeks before she returned to Pearl..

OK, I just can't stand waiting to show you all what the cranes really ended up looking like. With this installment everything is up to where it has been setting for a little while. Going back through this has re-inspired me to get back at it. I still want (and need) to finish up some other projects I am dealing with first so it will be a bit yet.

I am going to go ahead and post more on the crane building. It ended up becoming quite involved and I also ended up doing the 4 steps forward and 3 steps back bit. In the end it became 10 steps forward instead of halfway/halfarsed. Bear with me. While the first iteration looked really good, it didn't hold a candle to what I finally ended up with.

With one more post I will be caught up on where the build is. If you think this part was looking good before I tore it back apart, just wait!

Your attention to detail is fantastic. Really stupendous work. I'm of a mind to sell off the 200th Scale AZ I have in the stash after seeing what it's going to take to make her accurate.

Actually, nope!

Wait and see what more I do. I don't think anyone has gotten the cranes even close to correct so far. Only by studying that one photo (A LOT!) did some things become apparent. I think you will be amazed at the differences once they are shown.

Thanks for those photos Tegunn! I don't think I have seen those exact photos before. What I have found on some of this stuff is that even if some parts aren't the same, a photo might show some detail you need that is the same.

As you guys are watching, I will get the next batch posted here. Enjoy!

Yeah a few more at a time than I usually post. Yes I got totally bored with the 5 inch guns and set them aside for a bit. (thinking about going and finishing them all up though) You will really like the stuff that ends up with the cranes.

Keep watching. More soon.

Eagle, I wouldn't get too wrapped around the axle on the 5"/51 mounts. By the time you install the O2 deck very little of the gun is seen. For the discussion, here are some pictures from the USS Texas.

I would believe that Cliffy. There are a number of photos of 5 inch guns and their mounts. The barrels all seem to be the same but the mounts kind of go into two types. What I ended up doing was to scrutinize one of the really high res photos I found on the web of the Arizona from about 1931. There is the 5 inch gun just behind the 2nd turret and even though it was a bit fuzzy, it showed enough to get a good idea of what was there.

What will probably irritate you guys is the fact that I spend so long getting the details right that I get to a point and then jump around a bit. Never fear I will get back to the stuff not quite finished, but it might take a while.

Too many irons and not enough fire.

This is gonna be good!!!

Just a factoid, I found out recently that Olympia's current 5"/51s are from the Pearl Harbor BBs. West Virginia and I think Maryland were mentioned.
