No. I used the 1/350 USN 5" 25 cal gun barrels (SM-350-51) because the lengths of these seemed to match the scale length of the 5" 51 cal guns in 1/429. I used the 1/350 IJN 12.7cm '40 5 inch type 89 gun barrels for the 5" 25 cal guns again because the length seemed to match what they should be in 1/429.

And I checked out your WIP on the BBs listed above and it looks very good. I will be looking forward to the finished models.

LOL. My B-I-L and friend both work IT and they're miserable. The constant travel and need to be available 24/7 are real downers. Glad you found some solace in your hobby. Now that I've "grown-up" and no longer build my models just to play with them, I can enjoy the journey rather than focusing on the destination.

Hi David,

I got them from a Shapeways seller, EBard Models. I can't seem to get a straight to the item link to work (something is getting messed up by the fire walls at work) but you can find them if you do site search on OS2U. They look pretty good from 3 feat, but I really should have done something to smooth out the pebbly surface.

The barrels for both the 5" 51 cal and 5" 25 cal guns are brass form Master Models but I cant remember off the top of my head right now which ones....I will check when I get home....

Well that gives me hope that he'll get the 1/487 1.1 quads as well.... I have their 1/426 Quad 40mm Bofors for my second ship model project, the USS Pine Island, and they are really really good. A bit delicate but definitely worth the effort.

I am currently working on the stern aircraft crane.

But I have run into an issue. The PE set I'm using (Tom's Model Works) does not include a base for the crane? Does anyone have any drawings or a good photo of the base of the crane. So far I have had no joy in my search of the Internet and both of my references do not show the base of the crane to good advantage.

You new cranes look a lot better than the old clunky Revell plastic.. Keep it up.

Ok a little more work on the glacial build. Got way to many things going right now. Overtime at work and building a house, well having it built anyway... But I have made some progress on the boat cranes.

I used the PE booms from the Tom's Model Works PE set, the top part of the kit's crane and fabricate the bottom parts from some evergreen rod and a couple of disks punched out of some 30 thou evergreen sheet. It seemed the only way I could get a decent representation of the base of the main boom attachment point.

Here the major parts (main boom, support boom and mast) have been assembled. The crane on the right has the hand rails attached to the circular platform where the main boom attaches to the mast as well.

I was finally able found some spare minutes for modeling and was able to finish the stern catapult. Hopefully once the new testing release goes out this Thursday I will be able to get off the 12 hour work days and find some more time to work on the boat cranes… So here is where I am at now.
