Caption. NAA: Series, Item‘As fitted’ drawings of HMAS Albatross, 1928. NAA: C3266, 1
The seaplane carrier HMAS Albatross, designed by the British Admiralty in 1925, was constructed at Cockatoo Island Dockyard for the Royal Australian Navy as ship number 106. Laid down in April 1926, launched on 23 February 1928 and completed on 21 December 1928, it was the first Australian-built seaplane carrier and the largest warship built in Australia up to that time. Length overall was 443 feet 9 inches, and displacement was 4Ê800 tons. The vessel had capacity for nine aircraft, but usually carried only six. In 1938 it was transferred to the Royal Navy as part payment for the cruiser HMAS Hobart.
