Thanks everyone. The Poelau class ships were built as true combination liners (more than 12 passengers so they had to have a ship's doctor on board) due to NL government mail subsidy rules mandating 8 liners on the NL-Indonesia route capable of taking a substantial number of troops and civil servants. The Nederland could not afford building eight 18 to 20000 ton liners of the Johan van Oldebarnevelt class, hence the category split and the move to large combination liners. The co subsidized rivals of Rotterdam did the same (Dempo vs Kota class). This may help visualize it. The 1/700 GA drawing is of mv Christiaan Huygens of 1928, an 18000 ton liner built on the slip next to Poelau Laut.

And Poelau Laut was a direct replacement for SS Vondel of 1907.

Hi Pieter,

Again you created a little gem! Thanks for showing us. Very nicely done!

I googled the ship itself: buit in 1928 in Amsterdam, and sailed for over 30 years until 1959 with the SMN or Steamship Company 'Netherlands'. It was one of the largest special built cargo ships, right?

The ship mainly sailed on the Netherlands East Indies route. The name is literally "Island - Sea" in Malay or Indonesian.

This is a model I started as part of the civilian and transport group build back in 2011.
The original ship is still one of my favorites and I spent the last month or so re-rigging her and repairing some damage.
