Topic review - The ship models of Robert Wilson...
Author Message
Post subject:  Re: The ship models of Robert Wilson...  Reply with quote
My only comment on the lovely sailing ships (Ok they are not all technically rated as "ships") is that they generally if on a reach or beating into the wind, acquire a list to leeward which can be considerable, especially for a tall rig.

The rig and sail on these are spectacular, I wouldn't even attempt it!

Thanks fro sharing! Tom

Really impressive ships and cases. I've read the article on building display cases but how is the ocean made?

The seas are just plasticine (modelling clay) painted. The white is added whilst the blue is still wet so it runs. I recently changed to using polystyrene foam moulded with a gas torch and I found the details in "Making Seas" here on Model warship. I think it is in the Hints & Tips section.

The inner base is glued to a card base that is covered with green felt. The display case sits on the rim and is held in by screws driven up vertically through the green-felt-covered card and into the wooden moulding round the bottom of the display case - like this:

Hello all,

I am new here, so I'm still trying to take it all in!
I must say however that it is an absolute pleasant surprise to find this topic. I have been a fan a Bob's models for many years. I have marvelled at his techniques and results. But the most surprising thing of all is finding that building the way he does is much easier than it appears.

At the moment I am building the Glenmoor and have the hull finished using the plans and instructions in his latest CD.

It was such a breathe of fresh air to unchain myself from the shackles of model ship kits that this has become the future of ship modelling for me. I have already begun planing my next two projects after I finish Glenmoor. Besides I can fit many more models of this scale into my modest home.
