Think of it as a Russian version of the Arsenal Ship the US thought about several years ago.

I'd love to see an estimate of how many VLS Kalibur missiles they can pack into the area forward that was originally for SS-N-19s.

While most of the world may soon be afflicted by a pandemic, Russia goes forward with working on the Nakhimov:

Sevmash Shipyard which is overhauling the Admiral Nakhimov heavy nuclear cruiser of project 11442M began a new stage of work. It is installing large-size equipment, the shipyard said.

"The work is simultaneously proceeding in the bow and stern engine rooms. The main turbine is prepared for installation. The shaft is to be assembled soon," it said.

Anchor and mooring mechanisms have been prepared. Cabins, insulation and cables are being built. Specific attention is paid to safety and exercises are regularly held. The shipyard has to float the cruiser from the dry dock and complete the overhaul at the embankment.

The Admiral Nakhimov heavy nuclear cruiser of project 1144 is designed to destroy sea targets, strike at coastal objects, ensure air defense of a navy formation. It was floated in 1986 and became operational in 1988. It has been berthed at Sevmash since 1999. The decision to restore the warship was made in 2012. An overhaul contract was signed in 2013. The Admiral Nakhimov will be able to fire Kalibr missiles. The displacement is 24500 tons, the length is 251 meters. Full speed power is 140000 HP, the speed is 31 knots. The crew comprises 728 men. The cruiser can carry a Ka-27 helicopter or its modifications.

Wrong. Their attack jets have left but their Ka52 and Ka28 attack helos have stayed and the number of helos has actually increased

needless to say, they're also having some pretty brutal budgetary issues. not sure where they're finding the money for this.

This is a rather desperate move by the Russians. These ships must be very costly to man and maintain and I suspect they will be more symbolic than useful.

That's a good question..

Reactivating the Iowa's isn't really feasible, and even if a wild hair went up..only Iowa and Wisconsin would be able to be returned to service.

What is needed is a modern day battleship, or even a modern battlecruiser concept. Instead of having ships where the plan is to not get hit, have ships that work on not getting hit but won't be holed or crippled if they *are* hit and hit hard.

Russia's Kirov-Class Battlecruiser Fleet Is Expanding And Becoming Far More Capable

Only one of the four Kirov class ships ever built has remained in active duty since its commissioning in the mid-1990s, that ship being the Pyotr Veliky, the flagship of the Northern Fleet.<br />

As part of the increasingly belligerent recent Kremlin plan to revitalize the rusting Russian Navy, ship builders have been hard at work bringing a second Kirov class battlecruiser, the Admiral Nakhimov, back to life after it had been rusting away in storage for a decade and a half. She’s getting overhauled and is set to be returned to the fleet in 2019.

At that time, the Admiral Nakhimov will take the place of the Pyotr Veliky, which is slated to enter dry dock for three years where it too will get a deep overhaul and refitting just like its sister ship.
