During WW I, the Eastman Kodak Co. was given a contract to determine the most effective dazzle scheme. Some libraries in the US have copies of the final report.

There's quite a fascinating history behind WWI maritime camouflage, I believe Picasso and the Cubists were directly involved, or served as inspiration.
