Chinese carrier sails through Taiwan Strait hours before Biden-Xi call

TAIPEI (Reuters) -A Chinese aircraft carrier sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Friday, Taiwan's Defence Ministry said, just hours before the Chinese and U.S. presidents were due to talk.
China claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory, and has over the past two years stepped up its military activity near the island to assert its sovereignty claims, alarming Taipei and Washington.
A source with direct knowledge of the matter, who was not authorised to speak to the media and spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters the carrier Shandong sailed close to the Taiwan-controlled island of Kinmen, which sits directly opposite the Chinese city of Xiamen.
"Around 10:30 a.m. the CV-17 appeared around 30 nautical miles to the southwest of Kinmen, and was photographed by a passenger on a civilian flight," the source said, referring to the Shandong's official service number.

According to the local military sources, PLA Navy will send the Liaoning and the Shandong aircraft carrier, with escort ships from three major fleets into a dual carrier strike group to conduct a large-scale military exercise around Taiwan and in the South China Sea this summer. Now PLA Navy officials are working on this large-scale exercise.
China’s aircraft carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong, are being deployed for the first time last month in Bohai Bay in the Yellow Sea to conduct combat readiness drills.

China home-built aircraft carrier tests weapons at sea
By: The Associated Press   14 hours ago

BEIJING — China’s Defense Ministry said the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s only entirely home-built aircraft carrier is performing sea trials to test weapons and equipment as well as enhance training of the crew.
Ministry spokesperson Ren Guoqiang said Friday the exercises were being conducted as planned, apparently unaffected by the country’s coronavirus outbreak.
The Shandong’s commissioning last year by Chinese President Xi Jinping underscored the country’s rise as a regional naval power at a time of tensions with the U.S. and others over trade, Taiwan and the South China Sea.
It is the second Chinese aircraft carrier to enter service after the Liaoning, which was originally purchased as a hull from Ukraine and entirely refurbished.

Byng,

If you scroll up further to a certain post, you will see a picture of the Shandong's launching at the Dalian shipyard.

The last article I posted only a few posts above refers to her commissioning at Sanya naval base though close to the South China Sea after her sea trials.

Furthermore, the links of other posts further up lead to sites that show pictures of the Shandong/CV-17/Type-001A carrier.

But to save you the trouble, here is one photo below, which shows her arriving at the PLA Navy base at Sanya on Hainan Island:

That article takes pains to avoid naming the ship, but it is indeed number 17 and Shandong according to state media Xinhua: http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-1 ... 638108.htm

Beijing's new aircraft carrier enters service at South China Sea base

BEIJING - China commissioned its first domestically built aircraft carrier into service on Tuesday at a key base on the shores of the disputed South China Sea, in another big step in the country's ambitious military modernization.
Little is known about China's aircraft carrier program, which is a state secret. But the government has said the new carrier's design draws on experiences from the country's first carrier, the Liaoning, which was bought second-hand from Ukraine in 1998 and refitted in China.

But it was returned to dry dock immediately after its first voyage to sea.

This is unusual.

It indicates technical issues requiring extensive work.

China’s state-run media has been silent on the issue for the past month.

But, now, the manager of the Type 001A construction project has been jailed.

Interior of China's Second Aircraft Carrier Type 001A Unveiled

A photo showing the interior of the hangar of Type 001A, China's second aircraft carrier, was released on the public account of China Shipbuilding Industry Corp, the shipbuilder, on Nov. 8 2017. Type 001A was launched in April this year and is domestically built by China.

It is the first time the interior of the carrier's hanger was seen since it was launched in Dalian, Liaoning province, on April 26. The ship is China's second aircraft carrier and the first one designed and made at home.

The carrier, whose name remains unknown, is the largest and most sophisticated surface vessel China has ever built. It has a displacement of 50,000 metric tons, with a conventional propulsion system. It will carry domestically developed J-15 fighter jets.

China launches first domestically-built aircraft carrier

China on Wednesday launched its first domestically built aircraft carrier, which will join an existing one bought second-hand, amid rising tensions over North Korea and worries about Beijing's assertiveness in the South China Sea.

State media has quoted military experts as saying the carrier, designed in China and built in the northeast port of Dalian, is not expected to enter service until 2020, as it will take time to fully kit out and arm.

The launch had been well-flagged as foreign military analysts and Chinese media have for months published satellite images, photographs and news stories about the second carrier's development. China confirmed its existence in late 2015.

The carrier's hull is fully constructed, the official Xinhua news agency said, adding that the propulsion, power and other main systems are in place.

First China-built carrier on target for April 23 launch

UPDATED : Thursday, 30 March, 2017, 11:56pm

China’s defence ministry has confirmed that the country’s first locally built aircraft carrier has entered its final stage of construction before the hull is launched, which media reports suggest could be as early as April 23, the founding anniversary of the navy.

“China’s first home-built aircraft carrier is now being fitted out, everything is going very smoothly,” defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said on Thursday when asked about the carrier’s upcoming launch.

“Regarding the news [about wether the ship will be launched in time for the navy’s anniversary] I believe you won’t have to wait too long.”
