Hi All,

I recently purchased the Model Monkey 1/700 Hornet Island (for Tamiya) from Shapeways, and I didn't expect the detail is so accurate that the three funnels have different diameters (Two large, one small). I currently have the Eduard PE set for yorktown class, which has funnel caps that fit the smaller funnel only. My question is if there is a PE set out there that has the larger diameter funnel cap? Or else i might have the use some putty to reduce the size of the larger funnel in order to fit my PE set.

Thank you,

Andrew

I am more worried about having railings that fit on the walkways.

If it can print blueprints from your designs, then perhaps it can just export a JPEG file. The modeler could then print it out on sticky paper, cut out the outline, and apply as a painting mask?

Thanks so much! I hope the island will be a great help to you.

If you look closely at Martin's great photos, you can see the ribs on the inside of the splinter shields and the exterior electrical cabling detail. Also note the different porthole sizes and the accurate deck shapes. All of this was made possible by the product requestor providing the actual builders plans of the island.

That looks amazing!

As to how to paint the inner decks: Steve, how difficult would it be for you to output the decks as only a flat image file, so that one could lay them over masking tape, cut to shape, and simply drop down onto the island?

Neat idea! I'll see if the software I use will allow me to do that. It is designed specifically for 3D printing rather than 2D plans printed in perfect scale. No promises except the old college try.

The Model Monkey CV-8 island showed up today. Some photos of the island, with and without the Trumpeter island.

File comment: I scraped away most of the raised line on the flight deck for the kit island, as the MM island won't fit with it on there.

Overall, the MM 3D printed island looks great. It's a big chunk o' 3D printed plastic. I'm just wondering how I'm going to paint all those decks inside the splinter shields!

Hi Admiral! Great question! The Model Monkey 1/350 Enterprise and Yorktown islands can certainly be used for the Merit kits. From what people are reporting here, the Merit kit islands are excellent representations so careful consideration is recommended to decide whether the cost of replacing them is worth it.

Thanks Steve, I haven't had a chance to really look at my Enterprise and Yorktown yet. When I get a chance I will have a look at my references and the kit islands to see if they need replacing.

I totally agree John. Although I have sets from others to backup the eventual Hornet project, I was particularly interested in the interior aspects of the proposed Pontos set. I also like to mix and match the best qualities of all available sets. I may have enough to do a reasonable exterior rendering....but it's those open barn doors you can view the interior thru. I would really like to flesh it out. I may just have to do it myself. ....Gene

It might be worth an e-mail to Infini to see if they intend to do a 1/200th scale up of their 1/350th YORKTOWN detail up set. They have not said - and I have asked - that they will be releasing a HORNET set in 1/350th, though I'd bet on an ENTERPRISE set, saying only that they have a lot of projects scheduled. That might dim the possibility of a 1/200th HORNET set if they don't even have one in line in 1/350th. But it is worth a try I'd think. After all, I have it on good authority that the lead designer for the Infini YORKTOWN set is lately from Pontos. Looking at my 1/350th set, and especially the layout and instructions, it looks to be a dead ringer for Pontos sets I have used. Thus implying the slow down in Pontos is probably the result of losing a key designer, not some other reason.

Now, if Pontos would get off their keister and finish the 1/200 Hornet detail set promised so long ago I could finish what they started..... :heh:

Thanks John and Gene! It's very good to know that you are very happy with the islands.

Hi Admiral! Great question! The Model Monkey 1/350 Enterprise and Yorktown islands can certainly be used for the Merit kits. From what people are reporting here, the Merit kit islands are excellent representations so careful consideration is recommended to decide whether the cost of replacing them is worth it.

For those interested in building Hornet in 1/350, either of the Merit kits provide a goodly shaped hull and Model Monkey provides a very accurate Hornet island, which is very different than Enterprise and Yorktown islands. Combining a Merit hull and an MM island, if budget allows, provides a great basis from which to build an accurate Hornet.

For those building any of these ships in any other scale, the Model Monkey islands are far and away much more accurate than the kit parts. Like better times the speed of light, which is c*better.

No John, still addicted to the old habit. Finishing one addiction before moving on to the next. I'm just stocking up for that cloudy day. But, if Steve doesn't slow down a bit, it's going to have to be a Monsoon.....Gene.

Gene -
Now what? Are you going to shift targets to HORNET, or keep working SS US?
I'll be taking a shot at soda blasting my 1/350 islands early next week. I bought 50# of the industrial baking soda, so if you intend to go the same route you can stop over and grab some white powder for your habit. Model habit, that is.
