Topic review - Trumpeter 1/200 Scharnhorst - issues and upgrades

I bought a 1:200 Scharnhorst and for the first time in my life it was missing a major part. It was missing the T-1 deck .
I called Hobbylinc the place I ordered the model from.
I received the replacement part in about 1 week !
Great customer service.
I like the Scharnhorst because it has great looks.
It has a aircraft hanger with sliding roof. It has three cranes and torpedo tubes on deck. A bridge with lots of railings to lead your eye around the superstructure.
It comes with P E that is workable.
A great looking model.

The Scharnhorst had the bow modified to help with the wetship problem.
The Bismarck got rid of its anchors, and chain, lifeboats, in efforts to get a dryer forward faster ship.

I may have miss spoken on Trumpeter spare parts. In 2019 I was able to get a set of parts for a 1/16 tank. It took months but they did ship them. I emailed them from their website. I will try to go back and find it and forward the email address.

I never heard back from Pontos on spare parts for the 1/200 Bismark update.

I have a couple of notes about the Scharnhorst 1:200 model by Trumpeter.
The first pages of the instructions
Show holes that need to be drilled.
If you glue the deck on the hull you w

ill not be able to know where to drill the holes for deck items.
The Gneisenau shares some parts.
The bits (E4)on the deck need to have the holes drilled larger.

Thanks Paul 2660 for letting me know to not waste my time trying to get a spare part for the Scharnhorst 1:200 model.

I lost one of the two roller chocks on the very tip of the bow. The carpet monster got it.

Some modifications? Well, that's a "tiny" understatement.

In any case, his great modelling skills are obvious, and he will need them a LOT!
It's very sad to see that Trumpeter did not do their homework, so many omissions and errors,
and atop that a huge issue of wrong shape and position of deck section in front of starboard capstan
where anchor chain is laid down.

To correct that error seamlessly (without a trace) in next to impossible. Trumpeter should make correction of that piece of deck and offer replacement at no charge.

It's very irritating to have to do a major surgery of those proportions to a new kit worth 250-300 US$, EUR or GBP!

And ... let's see if all those wooden deck manufacturers will "adjust" their decks to fit perfectly to messed-up Trumpeter deck. Or not?!

What a FUBAR situation in the making. :)

And if you wonder, yes, I already have 1/200 Scharnhorst in my stash. :thumbs_up_1:

Out of curiosity, what would need to be left off or scratch built to build the 1/200 kit as the Channel Dash fit?

TIA

Here are some images of Scharnhorst At Kiel under refit (6th) in mid 1942, departing for Norway and at Norway, all showing the deletion of the rangefinder on turret Anton.
The camouflage painting of him during this time of mid to late 1942, is in his next to last pattern.

Are there any contemporary documents from the Second World War showing that German major warships were considered masculine? A quick Internet search produced, amongst others, the KTB for Operation Berlin (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source= ... n7aj76U2Rg), in which the names of both of the "Twins", where they appear, are preceded by the feminine article (ie "die Gneisenau" and "die Scharnhorst"). Bismarck's captain, Lindemann, is said to have directed his adjutant to make sure that his command was referred to in the masculine, but I've not seen that in a reference from the period (this is mentioned in Frieherr von Mullenheim-Rechberg Battleship Bismarck: A Survivor's Story (1980)).

Edit: von Mullenheim-Rechberg wrote “Lindemann added: One more thing. In the future, I would prefer to hear people on board use the masculine form when speaking of the Bismarck. So powerful a ship as this could only be a he, not a she.” I resolved to accede to his wish and, although I have had a few slips of the tongue, have done so ever since." - by implication, the norm was that ships were referred to in the feminine.

Not sure where this illustration came from, so I do not have any way to credit the artist.

Note the turret Anton rangefinder deletion.

Scharnhorst had the rangefinder removed from his turret Anton during the 5th refit to that battleship during his port stay at Brest, France, December 1941 through January 1942, just prior to Operation Cerberus (Channel Dash) in February 1942.

All of this will be covered in my upcoming Vol. 3 of German Battleships of WWII.

After a long delay at my printer, due to technical difficulties, and a complete re-print...............
Warship Pictorial 49 - German Battleships of WWII Vol. 2 should be delivered to me this coming week, and begin shipping out to venders shortly after.
This volume will cover all four battleships from 1939 through to the sinking of Bismarck in May 1941.

Warship Pictorial 39 - German Battleships 1939-1945 is to be considered as Volume 1.

As I understand it all German capital WWII ships were addressed as him not her. Which always surprised me. I have one shot of the ship in 1943 which appears to show no rangefinder. Will try to post it in a bit. Will correct date.

A photo of Scharnhorst in the so-called "Baltic" scheme, captioned as being taken in November/December 1940, shows the rangefinder housing still fitted to "Anton" turret.
The previous posting clearly had a typo (1953), and referred to the ship in the masculine. Most references, in English or German, use the feminine to refer to ships; I have not seen an authoritative document showing that Scharnhorst (or any other Kriegsmarine warship - except possibly Bismarck) was referred to as "he" or "him".

Even the box are shows Anton without the rangefinder. It was removed sometime before “edit”1943 as the ship was very wet even after the Atlantic bow was added. Pictures of him in Norway clearly show no rangefinder on Anton.

Hopefully Pontos comes out with sometime soon. Maybe MK1 will follow?

Just hope Pontos figures out how to answer email requests for spare parts. Sometime they used to do but have not for the last two years of my trying.

Hello,

I got my Trumpeter 1/200 Scharnhorst shortly after it was released and already back then, when looking through the kit, I noticed at least one major error: The turret "Anton" should not have rangefinders on the sides but only flat covers. I did not search any further but I'm sure there are other flaws with this kit. I'm surprised anyway, that there seems nearly no reviews of this kit, except some out-of-the-box reviews on Youtube. Does anyone have a link to more "in-depth" reviews of the kit? Or is there a list with the errors?

Another thing that strikes me: There are surprisingly nearly no aftermarket upgrade parts available for this kit! There are so many things available for the 1/200 Trumpeter Bismarck and Hood, but only a basic set with wood deck and turned metal barrels from a chinese company I found on Ebay. Is there any information about upcoming upgrade sets for the Scharnhorst?

Thanks!

HI... I'm no expert, but the Anatomy of the Ship book on the Scharnhorst does show side rangefinders on Anton.

Also, I heard that Pontos is working on a detail set for this model.

Take care, Jim
