Another possibility, useful for numbers and names, is the use of a Cricut type machine to either cut characters to use as press on's or as painting masks. I have used this for both processes and is quite good, about as small as I could go was draft marks in 1:144

I am looking for a source for custom make decals in 1/72 and 1/48 scales.
