From reviews, the ICM parts do look great. Those boats look very nice as well. As I said, I hope you will post more! You should make a thread on your Vanguard project...and you could post photos of your Rodney in the Picture Post section! :thumbs_up_1:

Cheers!

Thank your, Aop!
I really like this project, as I could make good use of the large majority of the ICM kit parts, most of which are very good themselves, like the boats. I also used the WEM PE set fort the railings and some details. But generic railing could have been used as well. The turrets turned out well too, thanks to the availability of very good drawings.

Mmm,

She's finished -- except fort the railings and rigging that is. I'll post a picture of the current state.

You have hit on my biggest bad habit: closing off a project to all the finesses is not a strong characteristic of me... Many more lying around in different states....
It's the novel challenge that's attracting me to jump to new subjects, to solve something no-one had done before. The patient execution of handycraft I'm not so good at.

Another masterpiece! How is she looking like now? You really should post more of your ships. They really are inspirational models! :thumbs_up_1:

Time for an update on my build of SMS Baden. More and more details are getting added...

I also started a similar conversion of the ICM kit into a Kaiser class battleship, see in the appropriate section for that.

Hi,

At 1:700 scale our fellow Dariusz Mazurowski has made great effort to build all four ships of the Bayern class, in varying settings. Check out:

I built mine in 1997.... pre internet ( easier research!!) and pre custom -made PE

its a good starting point- though I guess probably now superseded by the Combrig quality of kits...

Thanks for the comment, Jim!

The Baden has already progressed much further, I should upload some pictures of the built, before it is all done...

By the way: along the same line I'm considering also the conversion of the König into the Friedrich der Große, a Kaiser class. In fact this will be even much easier, as the hull needs to be shortened instead of lenghtened, the Königs turrets can be used with small mods, and the superstructure is much simpler than that of the Baden.

Happy modelling!
Maarten

Happy New Year to you all, with much pleasure in modelling!

I thought it was time for a little progress update on my 1:350 SMS Baden built. Painting and detailing has started in earnest.

Regards, Maarten

Post subject:  Re: 1:350 Bayern/Baden converted out of König kit  Reply with quote
Hi there,

As promised, some pictures from my progressing 1:350 Baden.

The ICM König hull was stretched by 13.5 mm at its widest point, and in the keel a 1.5 mm insert was added to get the required beam. Also, the docking keels were added and the shape of the bow was corrected: from the keel to the stem there is a distinct 'kink' at frame 134, which is totaly missing in the kit.

A new deck was added, laid with Evergreen 2020 v-grooved plate. The deck over the casemates was made as per drawing, and the König casemates were juggled as to make the best fit of them, needing several modifications and one completely built from scratch. Also the shelter deck was made.

I also made a 38cm turret plus guns from scratch, and had a friend of mine casting four copies from resin. Well, now on to building the superstructures, I already made the funnels from Evergreen tubing, and modified the Königs conning tower into the shape for the Baden.

Well, that's for now, once the superstructures are there I'll show you more.

Maarten
