Looking at that image again, I notice the bank of canvas covered .50’s. Must be the timeline this image was taken-

When I get home from work, I will go through my books as I want to say one of them had a mention of her armaments.

Another great find. Almost looks like the amidship splinter shields haven't been installed around the AA guns yet.

Anyone have a definitive list of her armament in June '42, other than the six 12" guns?

Here is Wyoming in Oct.'41. She is wearing MS-12 with 5-S on her hull, 5-O on all masses above the hull, and 5-H on her forward mast fighting top. Also, unpainted teak decks.

Yeah, I see what you mean with the overhead shot. In this shot it almost looks like they are still in the process of painting the midsection in question. Looks like they have a scaffolding platform just forward of the accommodation ladder.

Be careful, I think there are some shadows in play here. Look at the overhead shot Martin posted and see that the "shades" in this area isn't visible. Plus, the overhead shot seems to show places that had been touched up. Also, look at the other quarter stern view with this image on Navsource, this same area looks "lighter" than the aft section of the hull.

Something to note in the overhead image Martin posted, she has a twin 40-mm mount installed alongside the bridge. This is one of the first (maybe the first) such mount installed onboard an USN ship. The first twin 40-mm mounts installed on destroyers was on 1 July 1942, on USS COGHLAN (DD-606). Likely installing this mount was why USS WYOMING was in Norfolk Navy Yard in May-June 1942.

Thanks for checking Martin! That pic has some amazing details at higher rez. Thanks for sharing it.

Do I see 3 colors on her starboard side hull here? Here mid section aft of the funnel all the way to the main mast looks to be a different color than the 5-N on the rest of the hull.

I'm pretty sure the superstructure is centered. I think there are two things that make it look otherwise, and both can be confirmed in the subsequent black-and-white overhead shot:
The main thing is that up high you're seeing the crane that's only on the port side - its bulk blends in with the superstructure and makes it look lopsided to port. You're also seeing a splinter shield and extended platform at the midship deck level for open 5" mounts on the port side, whereas the starboard has enclosed mounts and open railings. Though the extra platform should make the port side look broader, I think the angle of the photo causes the darkness of shield and guns to look "bunched up" close to the tower, whereas the starboard side's openness and long continuity of clear wooden decking makes it look more open and spacious.
Now, there may also be some true asymmetrical features up in the tower, with directors and related platforms relevant to particular AA mounts. Again. look at Martin's overhead shot. Wyoming had quite the asymmetrical AA gun layout, and I'd expect training sailors on all those different types of weapons included the guys operating the directors and maintaining & calibrating them, and not just the gunners and loaders (Could be wrong... is classroom and simulator training adequate for AA director operators and maintenance crewmen?)

While I was looking at the above color photo, does it appear the forward superstructure is not on center line but to port?

Martin, how did you get ahold of the HP kit? Have you been sitting on it for years? I've been searching for one but no luck. How is the kit? Need a lot of work?

I bought it - and started it - eons ago. The hull is actually quite nice. However, after looking a pictures and pulling the plans at NARA II, the forward superstructure is wrong, which led me to put the kit aside until I can figure out how to fix it - which basically means scratch-building the whole thing.

I've gone through that folder, as I had started the HP 1/700 Wyoming. I'll look to see what I've scanned.

I don't have this particular view of USS WYOMING. But, I can provide some interesting side stories about them. I came across a series of aerial color transparencies of ships in Hampton Roads at NARA. They had no dates, but digging on ships taken in the photos and help from others who know that area, put them as being take in Mid-June 1942. One photo showed USS WYOMING (AG-17) in the middle of a bunch of USN Transports receiving ammo alongside. The bow on image of WYOMING was at a fair distance and didn't show much of her pattern, but did show that she had unpainted wood decks.

Of the three Navsource views dated 6 June 1942, one is miss dated as 6 June 1943 in the Navsource caption, two are Norfolk Navy Yard photos taken post alterations made during a yard period from a surface ship. The aerial views may or may not have been taken at the same time from the same aircraft that took the color images of multiple ships. None of the color transparencies I went through were of WYOMING this close up.

But, the NorNAS took BuShips "required" aerial photos of ships in Hampton Roads after work being done at NorNY. Those photos were turned over to BuAer who sent them on to NorNY or in turn sent prints to BuShips. The third June 1942 image ... http://www.navsource.org/archives/01/013231.jpg ... an overhead aerial view, came from an ONI collection distributed for ship recognition purposes. The same image likely was also provided to BuShips. But, ONI would have gotten copies of the best views and sometimes they don't ALL show up in BuShips folders. I don't know of an ONI collection of images at NARA.

Because the caption says for one of the other photos (taken from a surface ship) ...

Photograph # 19-N-30947 from the Bureau of Ships Collection in the U.S. National Archives.

19-N numbered images at NARA are BuShips photos. If prints still exist, they would be in the 19-LCM collection. If the prints don't exist at NARA, the negatives "should" be available in cold storage. Also, there are microfilm rolls with copies of all 19-N negatives in the 19-Z collection (up to a point after WWII). The 19-Z collection of microfilm rolls of images (pretty poor quality) ends up being a sequence ordered index of the BuShips photos. The sequence of images taken from the surface ship, will likely be in number range near 19-N-30947 (in about Roll #35-36). It is questionable if the surface ship (boat) that took those images went all the way around the ship. Whether the aerial view you posted is among them, I don't know. The BuAer taken images were turned in separately and could be numbered 100's or more after the above sequence.

I have not gone through the USS WYOMING (AG-17) folders in 19-LCM, so I don't know what prints they have. That would be a good place to search. NARA II, College Park, MD, 5th floor.

Hi Guys, Navsource has 3 photos of Wyoming dated June 6, 1942 showing her in MS-12 Mod camo. Two of them are of her starboard side and one is an overhead shot. There was a fourth pic taken that day showing her port side that is not included with the Navsource collection. I found a poor copy of it in an old book but would love to find a higher rez copy of this pic. Does anyone know where there is a better copy of this photo? I have scoured the internet for this pic but came up empty. Any leads would be much appreciated.

I'm working on a commission build of the USS Wyoming 1918. Does anyone have any close up pics or better yet a rigging diagram for her at or about that time period?

Thanks,

I've got the 1/700 Samek 1/700 USS Arkansas BB-33 kit arriving soon and wondered if anyone has any comments on building this kit or any good sources for her WWI-era fit; paint scheme etc.

Okay found this gem today: http://www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/80-G-451000/80-G-451391.html

From looking at aerial photos they're moored at Ten-Ten Dock. I was able to get a few shots of the pier wall from looking at salvage photos of the Oglala so I think I'm set. I'll just use artistic license for the rest.

Does anyone have any more info on this photo or by chance have come across more of the same scene? Its dated to early October 1945 at Pearl and depicts BB-33 moored alongside BB-64 during a respite between Magic Carpet runs. I'd like to build this as a diorama for possible display aboard BB-64.

http://navsource.org/archives/01/064/013364a.jpg

Does anyone know where in Pearl they are tied up so I could get some more shots of the surrounding area? I'm only going to include a small section of the pier/land but enough to show where they are.

The ships appear to be nested, correct? Any idea how the gangways between the two ships would be rigged or how they would be tied up to each other?

Would it be safe to assume that the crews had holy stoned the teak back to natural wood by this point?

Any and all help is appreciated as always.

Very nice find Rick! They will probably wish to have them scanned and hopefully add them to this page in due course: http://www.hnsa.org/doc/plans/index.htm
