Topic review - Calling all IJN Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

Big thanks today are also due to Christian van der Sanden, who graciously took the time to send me a quite thorough list of additional info on ship and location ID for many, many photos on the Yamato Web Gallery. He also helped me to correct several of the Yamato/Musashi deck & superstructure diagrams.

The site is now as "ship shape" as its ever been - and I appreciate the input given to me over the years by all other enthusiasts and historians to help me fill in the details.

I invite you once again to come on over and peruse the dozens of new additions just made to the Gallery over the weekend.

See, I knew I could count on you.

Btw, this one may be worth adding. Unfortunately, I don't have a hi-rez version. This is post Leyte Gulf, back at Brunei. Yamato is in the lower right.

THANK YOU!!! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: (Though you are QUITE mistaken :heh: ... because when I clicked on the photo it opened up HUGE!!! Easy to make out the ships and the identification scribbled on the photo) ...

... so these are the remnants of the Imperial Fleet after their massacre at Leyte .... licking their wounds before heading home ... something a little pathetic about the picture ....

Oh yes - I will DEFINITELY be adding it to the gallery!! :cool_2: :good_job: :thanks:

P.S. Here is my "cut and paste" of "Our Girl" from the photo:

Back to the earlier question - I haven't been following this thread for awhile. If the photo was taken during trials, chances are that it is a water tank. IJN ships were known to run trials with them to ensure that the displacement, trim, and GM matched normal operating figures when testing performance. When the ships became operational, they would have full ammo and fuel loads, and the water tanks would be removed.

I nominate your post for the "Informative Post of The Day" award. :thumbs_up_1:

This is something I never knew before that puts the relevant photo in a completely different light. :thanks:

Any other newbies, w/o my having to scrolll all the way thru? Page? (Yes, I'm being lazy.)

The First "NEW" photo is a photo of Yamato and Musashi at Brunei on p 14 of the index photos of the Archive (out of a total of 16 pages of index photos). Right after that photo are the 15 new diagrams, followed by the new photos.

BTW, I believe that most (if not all) of the "new" photos were posted on this thread ... which has a LOT more than 16 pages ... so you're better off perusing my Internet Archive ... :heh:

I have made a major update to the Yamato & Musashi web gallery over this weekend, adding about 35 photos and diagrams.

This brings me "up to date". You may have seen some of these "new" photos as they have popped up online the past few years, some photos are higher resolution versions of existing photos, and there are about 15 diagrams showing the changing superstructure and decks of Yamato and Musashi over the course of their lives.

These additions to the Gallery are all (for now) on the last three pages of the archive, for easier locating.

Enjoy! :thumbs_up_1:

UPDATE ON YAMATO WEB GALLERY AKA http://WWW.BATTLESHIPYAMATO.COM

As of this morning the website is back up. I have still not received any reply from Lycos Customer Support to my tickets, so whether they did something to fix the link, or their servers "hiccuped" and restored it on their own - I do not know. :-?

So if you want to go get some of the photos on there - get 'em while they last, because the last time the "fix" only lasted about a week or two before it went down again.... :censored_2:

First I would need to download all of my text from the site, as well as the photos (to avoid having to search for them on old external drives where they are stored). That all takes free time - which I had a lot more of during the years I was setting up the site than I do now (Thank the Lord! :thumbs_up_1: ). Setting up a new site would be about #100 on the list of life things to do and frankly I am not sure I even want to make the commitment to do that. We'll see what happens.

I received a PM this morning from IJNFleetAdmiral inquiring whether my Battleship Yamato Internet website is down for good. I am reproducing my PM reply to the gentleman below so you all can be informed as to what has happened.

"Good morning -

Your guess is as good as mine. My two Lycos Tripod websites have been down (except for a couple of weeks in early March) since the beginning of February. The monthly fees are paid, I have submitted multiple "support tickets" - and have heard nothing back.

When this happened about 5 years ago I heard back and it was fixed within a week. However, it appears that Lycos may no longer give a rat's ass about giving support to their "legacy websites". The angry comments on their subscriber forum indicate as much.

So to sum up:

a. Yes, its definitely some kind of server issue (I can still get into my websites and add/delete/rearrange photos - the sites just don't appear online);

b. I have zero idea if Lycos will fix it, and

c. I have to decide how many months I will keep paying for no service before I "pull the plug".

I could now insert my obligatory rant about the destruction wreaked on the useful internet by the (ever ongoing) hand-held device and anti-social media software revolution, but there would be no point. Suffice to say that this massive "dumbing-down" of the internet's usefulness - and of humanity in general (if you have any doubts about this - spending 5 minutes on ANY "anti-social media" site will instantly remove them) - has wrecked legacy websites - and forums like this one - and led to their large-scale abandonment. It appears that we are the "collateral damage" to the new "click-bait crack" revenue-generating internet economic model.

*I'm out*"
