In several photos of the sterns of these vessels, you can see some square-shaped brackets that appear to be holding life rings. The brackets are attached to the sides of the hull. In most of them something round is inside but in a couple of photos they are empty. Any thoughts on this ?

According to another source that I cannot currently lay my hands on, these photos were taken during one part of Mussolini's naval review for A.Hitler in 1938.

Good morning again.

New question...

In Steve Wiper's book Warship Pictorials no. 23 on Italian Heavy Cruisers of World War II, there are two starboard side images of the Fiume in Venice. One of the photos is an enlargement of the overall view and shows the midships area.

He says the photo was taken sometime between 1937 and 1939. Does anybody have any specifics?

TIA,
Chuck

For those who may be interested, I have learned that the structure did not have its own name, it was simply considered part of the mainmast. It would be nice, though to know what was inside of it. If anybody knows, please advise.

TIA

Greetings all,

I have a new question today...

On the mainmast there is a very large structure which has extensions off its sides. Does anybody know what this structure was called and what its purpose was?

Thank you very much, Adriano, that helps a lot.

One poster on Reddit claims that "Gorizia has a curious record with her motto "In Arduis Intrepida" - it appears and disappears throughout her career, ultimately for good by the time she receives her camouflage in 1942 - but generally it was found on her No.4 turret" (link below) but I haven't found much to confirm it and nothing that shows it on any turret.

Another resource (go to page 517): http://dreadnoughtproject.org/friends/d ... 0TROMs.pdf

I wonder if perhaps Gorizia's motto did exist in raised letters on Turret 4 but was painted over and not visible in the photos we have available to us, or maybe once there but removed entirely.

Can anyone help with identifying the turret mottos of the various ships of the class? For example,

Zara's turret 4 had "TENACEMENTE" ("Tenaciously" in English) emblazoned on the sides.
Pola's turret 3 had "ARDISCO AD OGNI IMPRESA" ("I dare to every undertaking", or "Courage in every undertaking" in English)

Please help with any others.

I found that Fiume had motto Sic indeficienter virtus (thus with inexhaustible valor) derived from the city of Fiume's motto since 1659 – Indeficienter. On the photos – really quick searching – I see only one word on the 3rd turret. My best guess is that the word is Indeficienter

For Gorizia, there was no motto, I guess. In the prewar photos, there is definitely no motto on the starboard side. On the port side, I see only a fascia on the 3rd turret and a royal (?) crest on the 4th one before the war...

The models look really nice. I wonder if you did the research on Pola's forward superstructure – how is the compartment's roof fitted to the funnel? I am rather a new guy so I cannot find the link to the model to look at more photos))) Also, I would like to know if you checked the funnel tops with the blueprints. I used online and inbox manual drawings to compare sizes and guessed that the funnel tops from the kit are 1/400, not 1/350.

Stopped my Pola project last year because of moving to another house, then due to family troubles, then due to renovation of the room that I do myself (so much modeling there))) But as the completion nears, I plan to restart the project.

File comment: This is my 1/350 Zara from Trumpeter, I had to make some corrections to the kit as the structure above the bridge was not in closed, it showed it correctly on the box art but wasn’t included in the kit.

File comment: This is my second build of the Pola 1/350 also from Trumpeter, this kit required extensive correction and a lot of scratch built parts, was quite the challenge, I have her hull red as there was quite a bit of debate on other forums but some ship yards in Italy at the time did the red and some did the green.

Yes that's it. I have a photo which shows it open on the forward end; that would make sense if there is a turbine in there.
Thanks Maarten.

I think you mean this, Chuck? To me it seems a windmill elctrical generator. Very common in the thirties and early forties.

Thanks for this reply Phil,

I have recently heard from other people who say the same thing, that they were hinged and/or removable.

On this particular kit there are two way up on the bow near the anchor races, and two midships--on each side of the ship. The accommodation ladders are in different locations.

With your reply, and Giampiero's, I think I am set.

Thank you both for your responses,
Chuck

Chuck,

Leadsman's platforms often were portable - they could be removed and stowed when not needed. Sometimes they were permanently attached but hinged to fold up when coming alongside a pier or another ship, or in heavy weather.

Heavy seas are not kind to things hanging off the sides of ships. On one cruise we were in five typhoons and a tropical storm in three weeks. When we finally got back to port several "permanent" fixtures were missing from the forward part of the ship!

Are they leadsman's platforms or platforms for side ladders?

Phil

The reason I ask is that the new Trumpeter Zara kit has them molded into the hull. A bit undersized, maybe, but they look decent.

TIA
