The Karas are extremely handsome ships, however much less documented than the Slavas. Chances of getting pics of their VDS are very small. In those days camera's weren't all that common, let alone that it would have been allowed to take pics of such things.

Does anyone know of any photos showing Kara class deploying their variable depth sonar?

I am actually looking for photos of Slava class’s VDS, any having no luck. I noticed the width of VDS doors on the Slava is similar to those on the Kara, so I am guessing they have the same or very similar VDS.

The Flat Screen was a test. There's something special about it, but I can't really recall what at the moment. I THINK, it was a phased array like US SPY-1 type of radar (although this one is rotating of course). I'm not sure, but I think that was the special thing about it, it can take a lot more targets than the regular Top Plate or Fregat radars. Kerch and Azov were both used for testing later in their lives. Kerch is still there, she's receiving occasional upgrades as she's sponsored by the city of Kerch. For a long time, a lot of things were regulated and provided by the city which sponsored the ship (and I think that actually still stands as of now).

Flat screen antenna looks like a normal frequency scanned planar array with serpentine wave guide that loops back and forth across the face of the array similar to Top plate, or the likes of US SPS-48 and sps-39/52, just much bigger, so it either operate at much lower frequency, or have much higher resolution than similar but smaller radars.

Their predecessors Top sail/top pair were also frequency scanned set with much bigger antenna than their western counterparts and operated at much lower frequency than their western counterparts. So it wouldn’t be the first time if the Soviets used much lower frequency for their main 3D search radar than the west. There is a recently declassified early 1970 CIA assessment which suggest the Soviets may have chosen very low frequency for their main 3D search radar to enable them to take takes advantage of atmospheric phenomenon to gain some unusual capabilities such as seeing well below the horizon and extending their range by detecting turbulence or rising thermals in the air.

Thanks, Maxim. That is very helpful. I did not know about it but I see they have a separate set on watertight doors that looks handy also.

Alas it doesn't seem to have the particular antenna I'm looking for but it looks like it has all the others.

There is a FlyHawk set "Russian Modern Radar". I do not have it here, but perhaps it could be helpful.

A friend of mine gave me a Kombrig Vladivostock to build. I'm looking for photo-etch sets for the radar antenna. I've found the GMM sets for aircraft carriers and for cruisers/destroyers. Are there any others? From the pic of them posted earlier it looks like there is a Big-net antenna amidships and I don't see them on the GMM sets.

Your ship was the` Tallin` renamed Vladivostok in 1990.
She carried the pennant number 547, applied in 85.
In 1987 her number changed to 531.

My own list, mostly confirming your list:
Kara
• Nikolayev 538, 155, 539?
• Ochakov 539, 707
• Kerch 713
• Azov
• Petropavlovsk 712
• Tashkent
• Vladivostok

Hello all,
Has anyone done the research to update the numbers? I am looking for hull 547, which "made friends" with USS New Jersey's battle group in September 1986 in the Sea of Okhotsk. I'm building a diorama of that group, and decided to place a Kara near them. Also reported were a pair of Grisha IIIs, for which I don't have photos.

Rick, You are correct about the ECM globes on Adm Drozd, the lower dome was moved several times over a number of years, but was moved back to its original position each time.
Adm Zozulya also had her lower globe moved.

Has anyone had any success in constructing either the Scoop Pair or Peel Group radar arrays in 1/700?

For the Scoop Pair, I am considering use of two SPS-10 arrays, one above and one below.
Thanks!

Looking at Kresta I class (Pr 1134) Side Globes ECM:

It appears to me that as built, all four domes were arranged in a vertical column. And it appears that when Vice Admiral Drozd was modified with the ADMG-630 ciws, the lowest dome was moved aft and higher than it was originally.

Can anyone confirm or correct me?

Thanks,
Rick

Hi,

Conflicting reports regarding Kerch status after the fire that broke out on November 2014 in Sevastopol.
Depending on the sources the ship will be scrapped or repaired and returned back to active service.

Thanks

What is with Kerch now? Will she be back in service?

What is with Ochakov? She was raised again. But I cannot imagine that she will be ever back in service.

Hi Timmy,

thanks a lot for the link. Highly detailed photos that will be usefully to my project!
And all decks painted with the standard Russian "brick colour"

It seems that none of this ships is in used today. All of them has been scrap.....

Thanks

Hi,

Any idea about the deck colour (or colours) of the Kerch (713), Project 1134B Kara Berkut Missile Cruiser of the Russian Navy, in her present version?
I couldn't find a good aerial colour photo, and I suspect that some decks are painted with a different colour (perhaps a dark grey colour), rather than the standard Russian "red brick" colour...

What do you think?

Thanks.

Hi all:
Not a very active subforum, but I wondered if anyone knows a source for the Czech "JaPa" 8-sheet plans of the Kresta I missile cruiser "Sevastopol" c. 1969 in 1:100 (or 1:200) ?
I've seen a copy and they look pretty good. Maybe Dave Wooley knows?
Best,
Paul

Hello Mike, Thanks for those, sorry it took so long to reply. I see you were also a recipient of the "Joint Services Recognition Journal" I don't suppose you happen to have any copies featuring the Russian Projects 159 Petya or Project 204 Poti?
