Topic review - Calling all RNN DeRuyter and Java class fans

I could recommend anybody building or planning to build a Dutch warship in general, and Java and De Ruyter in particular, to visit these pages on website of the Dutch "Nationaal Archief" (National Archives). I've posted this in the "Calling all RNN Tromp class fans" thread before, so you should replace "Tromp" for "Java" or "De Ruyter".... Drawings of Java (and Sumatra) can be found in section "3527-3565", drawings of "De Ruyter" can be found in section "3234-3283"....

have fun :)

aloha,

it might have been mentioned in another thread, but if you're interested in (building) former dutch warships, you should visit this page:

http://www.gahetna.nl/collectie/archief/ead/index/eadid/4.MST/aantal/20/open/c01:0.#c01:0. this is a collection of scanned drawings of dutch warships, sailing ships and motor or steam vessels and the scans are available for download

don't be afraid of the dutch language, google translate works on this page

in case of hr.ms. tromp,

1 - go to section 1.2 (Stoom- en Motorschepen) = steam and motor ships/vessels

2 - go to section 1.2.21 (Kruisers) = cruisers

3 - go to section 1.2.21.3566-3631 for 66 sheets of design drawings of hr.ms. tromp, including linesplans, deckplans, profile, drawings of engineroom etc etc

click on the subsections for the drawings:

example: if you want to see the linesplan, (click on the link for a sample pic)

http://images.memorix.nl/naa/thumb/1280x1280/c1cf542c-122f-a769-ac4e-9ca3bbfe45c7.jpg

1 - click on drawing nr 3580 (Lijnenplan en spantenlijst) = linesplan and cross sections

2 - in the submenu, click on the tab "Alle Scans" = all scans or click on "Bekijk de scans" = view the scans

3 - you'll see the drawings is scanned in three parts, click on the thumbs to view a larger version

4 - now you can view the image and zoom in or out to view details. click on "download" scan for a jpg version. be patient, it might take some seconds before the image is loaded and ready for download

hope this will be usefull :cool_1: and have fun exploring the rest of the collection

And another broadside of Java camo. And another of De Ruyter camo. And a photo of her namesake so to speak, the uncamouflaged earlier destroyer De Ruyter! :thumbs_up_1:

Attached a camo comparison of Java and De Ruyter; and the stern of Java showing DC racks, shielded Bofors, and point where stern sheared off. :wave_1:

EDIT: By the way, the sheared off stern section is the most physically destroyed 'wreck', or part thereof, I have ever dived, barely recognisable as what it once was; caused by not just the torp hit, but the detonation of the aft magazines, and many of the depth charges. A jumbled mess to say the least!

Sir, just noticed this post of yours. With all due respect, imagine you are finished build by now, so if for 1942 look, hopefully you included the shielded Bofors on De Ruyter, as also were there on her when sunk. :thumbs_up_1:

Sheilds are included for Bofors. Nice kit, looks to include everything for "as sunk" version.

Excellent, good to hear some model makers take some notice of indisputable 'advice'. :woo_hoo:

So goodo. Look forward to seeing a finished build then, as I just dive/d em (before salvaged that is), not build em. Leave that to you experts with nimble fingers!

Is there a pic of the model box somewhere?

Sheilds are included for Bofors. Nice kit, looks to include everything for "as sunk" version. I still wish they, and everyone else, would cast their full hull kits in one piece. I really don't like sanding and puttying. I know waterline guys don't like cutting and sanding, but since they are putting it in a water base, the lower hull edge can be rough, your sinking it in water. Much more demanding to get a good seamless waterline with joining upper and lower for full hull. Molded detail is very nice, and photo etch has relief details.

Do you know if it includes the aft Bofors 'shields' that, IIRC, was pointed out earlier in this thread?

The new Pacific Crossroads Java is on its way, I noticed their paint instructions call out English greys. Why would the Dutch Navy use English paint in early 1942? They had their own paint, I assume. The tone of that paint has been variously described, but I've not seen anything that ever indicated they were using the three shades of 507 paints. That's like assuming USS Houston was in English colors.

Looks good!

But why you painted the camouflage pattern to the lower hull?

Because it's easier to paint over than to repaint ;) I know I over-killed below the waterline, but I didn't want to under-do it and have to come back to it.

Have made a bit of progress on the model this week, came down with a cold and the boss told me not to come into work.... :thumbs_up_1:

I've pretty much finished the primary bits of the superstructure, and finished off the hull. Done a rough paint of her colours in 1942 (I believe - according to Profile Morski and a photo I have found), and am fairly happy with how it's all coming along.

Next will be the detailing.

The build is coming along well. It is my first time scratch building large parts of the ship, so I am learning as I go.

Most of the hull and superstructure has been modified or built, although still a few things to go.

I've finally started my 1/600 De Ruyter build.

It's not really a scratch build, as I'm using a mixture of pieces from existing kits (for example a modified 1/600 Graf Spee hull, modified guns from 1/700 Prinz Eugen, some superstructure pieces from both kits, and other spare pieces I have etc), as well as specially created pieces (for example the deck, and most of the superstructure). I'll be using PE for some of the smaller guns, and modified guns for others.

Completed the first stage of the deck last night. I should be able to coerce the Graf Spee hull to fit the shape of the deck with some persistence - although it remains to be seen how successful it will be.

For detail of model, I'm relying on several builds and plans I have found, including these:

And what year do they portray, as built or......?

TIA.
