The American Beauty resistance soldering station is now a tool I must own. I borrowed it from a friend to use on this project. It would not be possible to build it with out it.
I had never used one before now and didn't think it was anything I needed because I had the Hako. Boy was I wrong. I now fully recommend it for anyone building photo-etched assemblies.
It makes things possible that that would have been difficult if not impossible before. The one in the picture has what the call the pliers end. The one I used has the probe end which are tiny and act like tweezers

Here is another item that is nearly done I used both irons for. This is the main mast of the OHP.

I knew that they had to be soldered just for strength as I have a hbit of breaking assemblies I glue together and as there were so many parts to these it was a must.

Thanks
Tom

File comment: Tom or anyone else, how did you get that second platform into the mast? I'm guessing following PONTO's picture instructions was a mistake as I'm unable to slip it in as suggested and possibly looking like it will have to be dismantled, slip the platform in and then somehow reassemble but the more I think about it this could turn into a nightmare.

Does anyone have a photo or photos of the Mark 24 TDT Mod 4 target destination transmitter on the Perry class ship. I appreciate any help. Thanks, Joe

I have several hundred images of Aussie, and a few US FFGs on my Facebook page. All photos were taken by me ever since the RAN first got them. Search on Facebook for the Gatt 1/350. Model ships.

Hi all modelers,

After Photobucket asked me for a ransom for respecting my pictures, and after my denial, they have ruined my threads forever watermarking the pictures first and blurring them afterwards, and thus rendering all my pictorial work virtually useless.
I have seen that my work has been of some help for some other friend modelers in the past, which is the ultimate goal of this forum, so I have taken the time to convert my messages in this old thread to the standard right-click pictures provided by the forum. It is time consuming, but very easy, and this way the pictures will always be available. They can be open and downloaded without further problem now.

This is the new format of them all:

Never ever will I use Photobucket, Tinypics or whatever again. Bunch of pirates.

For all those interested, there is a more extensive picture file of this model at :

Best regards from the North Atlantic,

Willie.

Thank you for taking the time to do that. It is very helpful. I hope to get back to mine some day. And I hope photobucket goes out of business.

Hi,

What ships of the Oliver H. Perry class Frigate of the US Navy have the remotely operated 25mm Mk38 Mod2 Naval Gun Systems installed on platforms over the old MK 13 launcher magazine?

I believe all ships with the 25mm Mk38 Mod2 Gun are all long hull version, correct?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, I'm curious as to what you used to solder it together. Just a regular soldering iron tip or did you use a modified tip?

Thanks in advance

Anyone have and tips for building the AN/SPS-49 radar from the Pontos set? I am to the point where I need to tackle it. It looks like a daunting task. I have the main mast nearly done and most of the towers but this is so delicate I am looking for tips. I have looked at many pictures and now the parts fit is figured out, the directions not to much help here sometimes.

Thanks

Hi there Darcy and all,

This is the easiest thing ever.
For the bigger holes I simply make a number of holes with a drill, cut them away with an X-acto, refine them with the X-acto again, and finish them with files and sandpaper.

For the tiny ones, it´s easier: I scratch the inside of the surfaces with a half round blade until the plastic gets away by itself, and then refine with a file and sandpaper again. Done.

I hope this helps, and best regards,

Willie.

Thank you,
This really does help. The model I have is Academy and the vent markings are only on the outside, looks like this project is going through the winter months. HA!!
thanks again,
Darcy

Hi all,

Thanks a lot for your kind remarks. It is my pleasure to share this with colleagues.

The work of today was quite tedious, the exterior vent exhausts -- i think from the hangar, but i am not very sure.

Image

The offering from Lee was a very odd looking grid :

Image

Image

I had to cut off all the holes after stripping both bulkheads off all the details, until I got this :

Image

I had to place two supports inside, and then to cut all the pieces one but one, setting everyone in place before cutting the next. Quite monotunous and exasperating, but obviously this is a hobby -- nobody was compelling me to do anything... :sleepy:
It was then like this :

Image

As I was fed up with strips I thought I could do something a bit more pleasant, so I started the aft hangar bulkhead too :

Image

The process was the same, to strip the piece off all details, to open the holes and to complete it.

Image

Image

The articulated doors are made with Evergreen "V-Groove" # 2025 which most suitable for it.
The white lines in yogourt plastic are necessary for the painting.
And it is now like this, almost complete minus the two ladders and some minor details
Quedó finalmente así, a falta de las escalas y algunos detalles menores :

Image

And that´s all for today.
I hope you like it, and best regards,

Willie.

Just found this. May be old news to some of you but about 8:20 in they are doing drills in one of the hangar bays. I have only watched 10 min or so so far but a wealth of useful info so far.
It's called: The Last Frigate (US Navy Documentary)

Your craftsmanship is superb! Thank you for sharing the final pictures.

I served on the staff of NATO's STANAVFORLANT (old name) and have a tie clasp from the Frigata Santa Maria which I wear often.
