This was announced a few weeks ago, but figured I'd put it here too: the first 1/350 modern German vessel in plastic will be Takom's kit of the Sachsen DDG, ETA September 2021: https://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10803783

The German frigates of the Brandenburg class (Type 123/Klasse 123) now get Harpoon launchers instead of their antique MM 38 Exocet. Here a photo of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in August 2019 in Copenhagen: More photos: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Copenhagen(click on that page on "Link zur Bildergalerie" to see the photos)

Here some photos of a Braunschweig class corvette: Corvette Erfurt(click on that page on "Link zur Bildergalerie" to see the 95 photos) Some of the equipment, e.g. the RAM launchers, appeared to be not painted in the normal dark grey, but in a much lighter grey.

I am getting started on a DodoModels Braunschweig class corvette. (perhaps too small to even be considered as a corvette?)
Can anyone suggest correct or near-correct paint colors for modern German navy?
Thanks, Rick

Shameless plug. These and many others can be printed in acrylic plastic or the following real metals: - brass - bronze - silver - 14k gold-plated - 14k rose gold-plated - 18k gold plated - rhodium-plated They measure 71.2 mm x 11.25 mm. Requests for other ship's names are welcome. Other ready-designed nameplates with decorative rope border can be found here: https://www.model-monkey.com/nameplates

Here my completed model of the destroyer Bayern (D 183) of the Hamburg class (Klasse 101A) built using the Schleswig-Holstein kit by Admiralty Model Works: More photos here: http://www.modellmarine.de/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4929:zerstoerer-bayern-1700-admiralty-model-works-von-lars-scharff&catid=112:larsThe kit looks really nice, but some parts are overscale, e.g. the directors are too large (nearly 1/350!?), also the torpedo tubes and ASW launchers could be too large. The directors and the platform of the second director had to be lowered. The foremast lacked almost all details, the torpedo decoys system was missing and the gun barrels were too thick. In addition, the supports of the platforms for the rear 4 cm guns and the Exocet launchers had to added.

1.) the Exocet (which are from the destroyers of the Hamburg class!) will be probably replaced by Harpoon. The Exocet can be apparently used only to 2015, but are anyway already very old... Perhaps they will be also replaced later by RBS 15 Mk IV...
2.) I have never read that RBS 15 can be launched from the VLS. Perhaps this will be possible with the newest version?

Hi,
A couple of questions regarding SSM aboard Type 123 and Type 124 Frigates of the Bundesmarine:
1) Is there any intention to replace the 4x Exocet launchers aboard Brandenburg Type 123 Frigates with the 2x4 cell Mk 141 Harpoon launchers used on Type 122 and Type 124 Frigates?
2) Since the RBS.15 is due to be installed on the Type 130 Braunschweig corvettes, it's possible to fire RBS.15 using the Mk 141 launcher?
Thanks. Regards, Ayala Botto

Hi, You're right about the Baden-Württemberg class (F125) main gun. And another good example of a "frigate" The ship is massive! Probably the biggest frigate ever! I hope NNT decides to produce it at 1/700 scale as well as the K130 Braunschweig class (130) corvette! I have all modern Deutsche Marine models produced by NNT: Type 122, Type 123 and Type 124 frigates and a modified Type 103 Lutjens class Destroyer (former C.F.Adams USN class destroyer). FGS Lutjens was built many many years ago, and I'm looking for the "premium edition" produced by Dragon that includes an excellent PE Set to replace it. Thanks. Regards, Ayala Botto

Re: Calling all Modern German Navy fans |

The currently built Baden-Württemberg class (F125) has the 12.7 cm L/64 made by Oto Melara, which is more capable for attacking targets on the shore. I think the 7,62 cm guns were used, because they were already available.
There is anyway no difference between destroyers and frigates today. The RN classifies ASW ships as frigates and AAW ships as destroyers (but there is no size difference), the French, German and Italian navies call everything frigate, the Japanese navy calls everything destroyer and the USN classifies according to size (and therefore many European frigates are much bigger and more capable than USN frigates). But these are administrative classifications, not classifications which are universally accepted. I think we have to wait some years how these ships will be called in the future. I would call them all frigate including the remaining cruisers. Destroyer is not fitting, because this term evolved from torpedo boat destroyer and is for more than 100 years completely anachronistic. Today these ships are usually multi-purpose ships, which can be used as escorts, but also for independent operations. That means they are like classical cruisers - and frigate was originally one type of cruiser (before this term was abused for slow escort vessels in World War Two).
It is fitting that destroyers and frigates are combined here.

Re: Calling all Modern German Navy fans |

Hi,
It's rather curious to see the German Navy concept about main gun on warships. Rather than install large (127mm) calibre guns like the US Navy, Royal Navy or Marina Militare (just to mention a few western countries) or 130mm calibre guns (Russia), choose to install smaller calibre guns (Oto Melara 76mm) on all warships no matter the class and size of the ship (destroyers (*), frigates, corvettes and fast attack crafts).
This represents large cost savings, allows a greater rationality of means, and also greater maintenance gains and efficiency.
(*) - I'm not sure if Sachsen F124 class frigates and even Brandenburg F123 Class frigates, should not be considered a destroyer (DDG), due to her size, displacement, fire power, computing suite, communications, etc etc... After all, there not many differences with (for example) the Hobart Class air warfare destroyers (AWD) being built by AWD Alliance for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) or even the Arleigh Burke destroyer (US Navy), besides the ability to fire cruise missiles. Maybe and interesting topic to create and discuss on a differente thread.
Thanks Regards, Ayala botto

I think you are right that the one I have shown above is the current version of the satellite antenna. The gangway in the stored position is c. 90° to the deck:

Hi,
It seems the SatCom domes visible on your photos are the current version and I'll use them on my FGS Sachsen. I'll use the other ones on FGS Bremen F207 - German Navy Frigate Type 122 (NNT 1/700). This project is suspended because I lost precisely the domes!
Another question: the ladders close to the Torpedo Tubes have the same angle of the structure or are installed with a 90º angle to the deck?
Thanks. Regards, Ayala Botto

Hi, Thanks for the useful links. I noticed FGS Sachsen class frigates carry two different shapes of SatCom domes close to the MLG 27mm guns. NNT model also provides options for those SatCom domes. Take a look on the last 2 photos I published. Which SatCom dome should I use? Thanks. Regards, Ayala Botto
