I have found a few scanned slides in my collection. These were taken in 1985 and show HMS York as built. I may have more photos of HMS York taken in 1985, but will have to look into that.

Hi Everyone:
I need help with a build I'm doing, the 1/700 Pit Road D98 HMS York, Type 42 Batch III DD. I'd like to know the correct armament as-built initially in 1985, and also if there are aftermarket 20mm and 30mm BMARC guns available (if they were installed initially) I came across a lot of photos online, but very few as she appeared before the hull strengthening girder was installed. The only early photos I found were on the "Tyne Built" website, but even those photos don't clearly show the armament configuration. The York not being a pre-dreadnought or WWW I or II ship, I'm pretty much out of my depth. Thanks! :wave_1:

I believe the so-called "HMS Exeter" is actually HMS Avenger. Noting the presence of HMS Andromeda astern of her (recognisable because the other Seawolf-fitted Leanders had jammer radomes on their foremasts when initially converted - Andromeda's were fitted after the Falklands conflict), and that she arrived in the conflict zone after Antelope and Ardent were lost (and left before Amazon arrived post-fighting), that eliminates three of the Type 21s. Neither Alacrity nor Active had ESM aerials below the foremast radar platform in 1982, as this ship does, and neither Arrow nor Ambuscade carried SATCOMs aerials for'd of the funnel during the campaign.

I wonder if anyone would care to ID this ship. The photo was sold some time ago on eBay as HMS Exeter D89, but...............................

Today, 30 years ago, on the 25th of February 1991, an Iraqi coastal battery attacked the Allied fleet with two Silkworm (HY-2) anti-ship missiles. One failed, the other was destroyed by HMS Gloucester using Sea Dart - the first interception of a anti-ship missile by a surface-to-air.

I used the Dragon kit of York and adapted her to the 1991 fit of Gloucester.

Thank you very much!

The linked photos are very helpful, especially the one in February 1991 Issue 439. It clearly shows the torpedo tubes and give also some impression of the deck colours.

I have seen Gloucester myself - but only in the 2000s... I first did the mistake to compare the kit to my own photos...

Firstly the STWS torpedo tubes were a permanent fit rather than fitted only for specific deployments so if they were there in 1990 they would have been there in 1991 - they were still there in 1997 when I measured many fittings on Gloucester for a 1/32nd scale model!

On light AA guns, I found the attached via Google which hopefully helps although I don't have a date for it especially as I was under the impression that Gloucester would have had type 996 radar fitted by 1991 on the main mast but the shot from what looks like a Gulf deployment clearly shows the old 992 radar still fitted. Perhaps an earlier Armilla patrol?

I have lots of Batch 3 T42 pictures from mid 1990s onwards I can share but very little from early 90s. One resource you can look at is the Navy News archive which goes all the way back to the 1950s. A quick look for the Gulf War era suggested the shots at

https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/-/media/ro ... ue-440.pdf (page 20)
and

https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/-/media/ro ... ue-439.pdf (page 40)

would be ideal but the quality of the images is poor, especially when you compare with the newest issues. Maybe a paper copy could be found on an auction site?

I am searching for information to built HMS Gloucester as in 1991 (Operation Granby).

I found only few photos, e.g. in
Strike from the Sea by Iain Ballantyne
Sea Power. Desert Storm Special by Peter Gilchrist (appears to contain mainly photos taken before the war)

My main questions are:
did Gloucester had torpedo tubes when deployed to the Gulf?
what kind of lighter guns did she had?
any special markings? Union Jack on the bridge and also rear of the Phalanx?

Hi guys,

I'm new to Royal Navy ships and recently bought a pit road 1/700 HMS Newcastle kit. I would like to build HMS Sheffield at the time of her sinking in 1982.

Is there any changes need to be made to the kit to make an accurate kit and what aftermarket details needed.

The kit says its a batch 1 but I don't know the difference.

Thank you and hope I can ask more questions

Having seen HMS York four times ,and managed to get some Jecobin plans and loads of photos of her .I was lucky enough to get hold of a WEM HMS Nottingham batch II ,which I built as HMS Sheffield a batch I ,this model was damaged in a competition ,and I salvaged some of the parts to use in my scratch-build of the York. What a pity there isn`t a IM kit of a T42,now that they have gone out of service.

Regards Phil

Which colour had the flight deck of the Type 42 ships during the Falkland War? The normal dark grey or something darker?

I have seen that the landing deck on HMS Bristol in 1982 was darker than the rest of the steel decks and I am wondering, if also other ships had this feature.

Nick. Just stumbled across those fabulous photos of LIVERPOOL RASing. Do you know who took them and who owns the copyright? We may be interested in using them for our internal publications and would like to approach the photographer.

I think Sheff may have had green decks at the time she carried a Wasp and not grey decks.

Cheers,
