Why is the Kidd class search air-search radar suite reversed?

Almost every USN ship with the AN/SPS-48 and AN/SPS-49 mounts the AN/SPS-48 as high as possible and forward, with the AN/SPS-49 lower and aft - but the Kidds do not follow this.

Just curious why.

It was a mast and superstructure thing. The forward Mast was not in a position to handle the size of the SPS-48. The 48 was always to be mounted on the aft Mast. The original configuration caused detection problems (radar lobes) so they redesigned the aft Mast mounting the 48 high and mostly unobscured.

That is so awesome! I can only aspire to build a model like that in 1/350! :thumbs_up_1:

With the silly background music aside, here is an absolutely beautiful fly-by video of the Kidd-class in Taiwanese hands.

What a beautiful ship!

In the Mk-86 gun fire control system, the ROS was an independent camera with zoom that could be used to designate the 5 inch guns. Since the 5in 54 mk 45 guns . It worked reasonable well and was good for small boats and fixed target. The ship also had target detection and tracking (TDT) devices which were like the old designator system from WWII, except it sent a raw synchro signal to the gunmount and caused it to jerk around. We only trained to it on occasion.

Both photos show Kidd. These vents were later removed... This is just confusing. I also found that the thing on the mast was called ROS (remote optical sight) and it was part of the fire control system. I have not found any kind of info regarding this system though...

After some review, those gray items are stacks with herculite covers on them. I don't recall what they vent.

I served on Kidd from 1983-1986. The antennas amidships are UHF. The camera is the Remote Optical Sight (ROS) for the gun system. I don't know what the objects are and don't recollect them. I will do some research. Is this Kidd or Scott?

You're correct about the middle ones; def radio antennae (I want to say VHF). Haven't a clue as to the other objects but they look like their covered up so I'd guess they're sensitive in one way or another. Do you have the dates of the photos?

The object above the SPS-48 looks an awful lot like the Electro-Optical (E/O) sight that the CGN-38 class carried.

Those are my guesses for what they're worth.

Does anyone know what are the things in the circles? I understand that the midle ones are some kind of antennas but what are the other ones? They were sometime removed from the ships.

Here are my first conclusions:

Someone can build a late fit ship with the parts provided in the kit. No early fit whatsoever. In this case you have to use a RHIB (not provided in the kit) and single arm davits (provided in the kit as part F4, but not mentioned in the instructions).

There are two SRBOC positions, one mentioned in the instructions and one not. The second one is between the SLQ-32 and the Phalanx ammo elevator on the aft right side of the forward superstructure. You will also have to build two ammo ready lockers for these SRBOC.

DO NOT use part K21, the superstructure extension below the harpoon deck on the right side. It was never there in the first place, only on the left side.

The bow sonar dome is not of correct shape.

I will be looking for photographs of the props, but something tells me I need to find new ones. :heh: :heh:

Regarding the Chinese service of this class, they Chinese have changed the position of the ECM and placed them above the boat positions at the aft superstructure and the Harpoon missiles with their own version.

More to follow....

Thank you both for the help. I will post what ever information I find regarding the Dragon kit and the work involved in building an accurate model.

One more thing I have been looking for is whether these ships acquired RHIBs instead of the whale boats later in their carreers.

There is a difference between the Ticonderoga class and Spruance/Kidd classes in reguard to the V braces for the shafts. I don't know exactly what it is but a redesign was made and starting with Vincennes (block 1) it was made. Ticonderoga and Yorktown had a different modification. If the first five Tico had been refit with VLS it would not have really been worth it. Ticonderoga, Yorktown, Vincennes, and one of the other two could not be fit with strike length VLS cells on the stern. Forward only one was able to have a full 64 cell Mk41 mod 0 fit. The others would have had space for a 32 cell VLS forward. Without a large number of strike length cells it ment the ships would be severely limited in the number of Tomahawk, SM-3, and VL ASROC that could be taken to sea, also the number of SM-2MR would not be increased. The Kidd class was never intended to be fit with VLS. From the beginning it was 2 127mm/54 Mk45 guns, a Mk26 mod3 launcher aft (44 missiles), and a Mk26 mod4 forward (24 missiles). 20 missiles in the aft launcher were ASROC RUR-5, so the maximum number of RIM-66B was 48. The aft launcher was modified with NTU IIRC. Currently in ROCN they deploy with 62 SM-2MR Block IIIA.

Nick, root through the photos on Defense Imagery. You should be able to find some nice close-ups there.

http://www.defenseimagery.mil/index.html

I have a nice close-up shot taken from a helo that shows the upper decks nicely from the starboard bow. Its in the 14th ed. of Polmar's "Ships and Aircraft of the US Fleet". Let me know if you want a scan. I can see one set of them between the SLQ-32 and the Phalanx ammo elevator.

I am also looking for the SRBOC positions on these ships. The Dragon instructions point out a single position atop the bridge...

Is there a difference between the shaft arrangement and the v-brackets of the Kidd class ddgs and the Spruance class ships? Do the Ticos differ in any way?

What are the differences of a mid 90's ship of the class in relation to an ealry 80's ship?

Can a VLS be fitted both fore and aft replacing the launchers?

The NTU upgrade included a new long-range radar (SPS-49) on the foremast in place of the SPG-60 which was moved to a new platform on the mainmast, the 3-D radar (SPS-48) on the mainmast was upgraded and moved to a higher aft-facing platform, and the mainmast was enlarged.
There are photos of all four of the class on Navsource - http://www.navsource.org/archives/05idx.htm
