Well, there's some overscale versions from some earlier Pit-road accessory sets :-)

I have no definitive answer after having gone thru all my references, but I'd have to say that it's very likely she still had her single 40mm AA weapons when sunk.

One of the later Gakken volumes tracks AA fit changes for the prior Hatsuharu class, and those do not swap out their 40s for the 25mm until very late 1942 into mid 1943.

The Japanese Wikipedia entry for the Shiratsuyus states that the ships of the class swapped out these mounts in late 1942. However, a glance through their individual TROMS show the possible yard visits occurring over much the same timeframe as the Shiratsuyus. HTH.

Thank you Dan! I will place the 40mm guns in my model. The only drawback is that the guns provided by Fujimi is quite crude. However, there seems to have no aftermarket products to replace them.

Hi, all,

I am building the Yudachi using the Fujimi kit. My question is, what was her AA config. when she was sunk? Were her 40mm guns replaced by Type 93 25mm?

Thanks.

Mike,

I'm looking at the sprue breakdown here: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10227031

Sprue C x2 comes with the single D turret and the regular, early war foremast. So, an early war version shouldn't be a problem.

Conversely, IMHO, Fujimi seems to have erred a bit on Shigure's late war configuration. According to the Fukui Dec 1944 schematic, she has a conventional late war foremast to carry the the Type 22 radar, not the elongated configuration they put together here. Also, she carried a twin 25mm mount forward of the bridge, which Fujimi doesn't picture in its beauty shot, for some reason.

HTH,
Dan

Thanks Dan

That seems to only build into a pair of 4 gun ships. I was hoping for an early war 5 gun fit and a late war 4 gun with extra light AA fit in the same box, instead of 2 pretty much identical ships. I suppose I could do what I plan to do with several existing 2 ship sets I have, which is to build one and sell the other as a complete single kit.

thanks
Mike

Only if you get the Shigure/Samidare boxing. Shigure comes with her unique late war radar setup on the foremast.

I don't think there is a boxing with the std. late war foremast fitted to the other ships.

Hi Folks

I just want to check something. The Fujimi twin sets of the Shiratsuyus - am I right in thinking you can't get an early war fit option and a late war fit option in the same box?

thanks
Mike

Yes, those are the athwartship depth charge racks. The Shiratsuyus each came with two such racks, used to feed a Y-thrower that sits in front of each of them.

OK, I'm about to start on one of these - aiming for a 1942 configuration. I have the Rainbow kit to go with and plan on using some of that stuff. It shows a rack behind the aft turret that looks like additional storage for depth charges. Would that have been there in '42?

Can you refer to a part # on the Rainbow set? This is not readily apparent to me.

Sure, it's C9 in the Rainbow set and I believe it replaces part J2 in the kit. Thanks!

I appreciate the help with the kit listings, but it would be better if they could be placed in the appropriate class threads. At some point, I will get to the full listings for the Akizukis and Kageros.

It's possible that these ships still had the single 40mms in place to either side of funnel #2 in May, 1942. There's just not enough information available about their fit at that time.

There's no single good reference for this class that I'm aware of. Everything I've gathered is pieced together from a variety of sources, and it' still far from complete. Some of the Japanese modeling books do a decent job of charting changes to fit.

Hi

Thanks for clearing that up , that makes sense

I see the next ' new ' IJN destroyer Kit will be by Wave Models - of the 1/350 1/350 Fuyutsuki 冬月 1945
which is scheduled to be released in December 2017 - https://hlj.com/product/WAVBB-102

and on the Company's Twitter account - some great pictures - http://www.hobby-wave.com/LINE_UP/kit/e ... index.html

Fuyutsuki class

Project number F51. The Fuyutsuki subclass were originally going to be built to the same specifications as the Akizuki class but construction was more simplified. Four vessels were built under the Maru Kyū Programme (Ship # 361-364). Main differences from the Akizuki class were simplified bow design, removed rear deck house, and fitted two-dimensional air inlet for boilers. However, the IJN was not satisfied with the design. More modifications were ordered, leading to the Michitsuki subclass.

Suzutsuki 1945 - Monochrome - Nr. MCT103
Akizuki 1944 - Monochrome - Nr. MCT102
Akizuki 1942 - Monochrome - Nr. MCT101
IJN Destroyer Akizuki 1942/1944 Wave - Nr. BB-101
Akizuki - Blue Water Navy - Nr. BN 35067
Fuyutzuki 1945 Wave - Nr. BB-102W
Akizuki 1942 Hobby Station - Nr. HS01001

I think they have the chronology wrong. I believe the BWN kit was released some time in the late 80's or during the 90's, because the masters were subsequently bought by Classic Warships, who sold them to Yankee Model Works, and from there they went to Blue Ridge Models, where they were retired. It was also a resin kit with a high price that was supplanted by the less expensive, injected plastic Monochrome kit.

Hmm...from what I can find online both here on this site and other searches, there doesn't seem to be a 1/350 kit of any Shiratsuyu class destroyer, specifically the Shigure.

I'm hoping I'm wrong.

The only 1/350 Kits for Japanese destroyers are the Kagero Class ( Kagero , Isokaze , Nowaki , and Yukikaze ) by the following 2 Manufacturers

Tamiya Ship Series No.20 JAPANESE NAVY DESTROYER YUKIKAZE (1945 Version )
Tamiya Ship Series No.32 Japanese Navy Destroyer ' Kagero ' ( 1941 version )
Hasegawa 1/350 Japanese Destroyer Yukikaze 1940 Version ( Hasegawa -Nr. 40063 )
Hasegawa 1/350 Yukikaze - Operation Ten-Go 1945 Version ( Hasegawa - Nr. 40022 )
Hasegawa 1/350 Isokaze - Superdetail Hasegawa - Nr. 40069 - 1 ( produced 2008 )
Hasegawa 1/350 Nowaki - "Super Detail" Limited Edition ( Hasegawa - Nr. 40094 ) - new kit produced 2017
This limited edition kit features detail-up photo-etched parts plus three sets of decals for Nowaki, Hamakaze, and Tanikaze
Fujimi - 1/350 Destroyer Yukikaze Number 46012 (Also listed as 350-003 or FUJ46012 )

and Yugumo Class
Pit Road 1/350 IJN Yugumo ( reference WB-09 ) - interestingly it has a display stand with ' dry-dock '
which is exactly like the type Trumpeter provides

IJN Akizuki ( AA Escort ) Class
This was first made by made in Resin by Blue Water Navy and then later in 2008 onwards by Monochrome Models - then by Wave Models in 2016/2017 respectively .

Suzutsuki 1945 - Monochrome - Nr. MCT103
Akizuki 1944 - Monochrome - Nr. MCT102
Akizuki 1942 - Monochrome - Nr. MCT101
IJN Destroyer Akizuki 1942/1944 Wave - Nr. BB-101
Akizuki - Blue Water Navy - Nr. BN 35067
Fuyutzuki 1945 Wave - Nr. BB-102W
Akizuki 1942 Hobby Station - Nr. HS01001

and the Fubuki Class ( by Fine Molds )

Amagiri with US Navy PT-boat PT-109 by FineMolds - Nr. FW02 - 1:350
Ayanami - FineMolds - Nr. FW1 - 1:350
Shikinami Limited Edition - FineMolds - Nr. 38901 - 1:350 -
( note there is at the present no super-detail photo-etch set for any of these Fine Molds Kit )

and finally the Shimakaze ( Super Destroyer with 3 x quintuple TT's - only one ever built - also Tier 10 in World of warships ! )
Hasegawa Japanese Navy Destroyer Shimakaze “Late War” Version ( Ship Series No. Z29, SKU# 40029 )
Shimakaze - Fujimi - Nr. 460017 - 1:350 Kit released 2015

I have edited this list of IJN Destroyers from Scalemates and the internet - any omissions are my fault -
but its pretty comprehensive - there are a few re-boxings of the Fine Molds Fubuki Class - that I have not listed
but they cover the same ships listed above - so as far as I know - its comprehensive ( as of September 2017 )
kind regards
David Walker
