Hello, new to the forum. Came across this while reseaching these vessels. My dad was on the USCGC W371 Mackinac during the late '50's. I'm going to try to do the Mackinac based on all the great work done here. Mackinac had the balloon hangar and the towing rail on the stern end; I am trying to figure out how the bow and bridge were configured. I came across the 1/350 resin kit and could not believe it even existed. Great work and thank you for all the photos, scratch building ideas and reference material.

Carl,
I have got to be honest with you, that is just an insane number of little figures to paint for the USS San Pablo AVP-30! :worship_1:

And as to the small boats, my vote, for what its worth, is on the L'Arsenal offerings. They look crisper to my old eyes.

Here's the first layer of populating the USS San Pablo AVP-30.

AVP spotted in documentary video on YouTube. It is of the Flight which includes AVPs 33,34; 48-52. I think it is the Bering Strait AVP-34.

Projects are moving along nicely Carl! And interesting tip, will need to note that one down for later experimentation.

Cheers

I create canvas-covered railings using Kristal Klear brushed / spread between the rails. Easier to do with three-bar rails than with two-bar rails.

About ready for some primer. I gave the whole thing a bath in Bleche-Wite with a rinse and blow dry.

I used a rather thick set of PE railings from Tom's Modelworks (#5301). I didn't realize it until I had a lot of it already glued on. I'll have to carry through with this PE on the other two ships in the diorama. I have about 4 sets of it and it's nice PE, but thicker than what I had been using in the past.

I have always dreaded having to construct the support for this gun director tower from brass stock. I worked hard to make resin parts in order to make assembling these towers a whole lot easier in the future.

The old way....
