They look pretty good...however, ahem, I have never seen a picture of anyone on a short boat wearing a Duffel Coat. Wet. They always seem to be wearing a fairly eclectic assortment of waterproof kit.... So, paint the Duff black - there, fixed. Looks like another load of plastic on my wish-list...

I need to get in touch with my brother anyway so I'll be sure to ask him if he can recall which type of MTB/GB it was - and maybe also where Mr Ludlow was stationed. Would make for a fascinating display piece, having that kind of history behind it.

Great story, was that a short MTB or a big' un like a Fairmile 'D'? I think a 40mm might have been a bit heavy for a 70ft Vosper....unless some serious shoring up was done! Conjures up a hell of an image....

Wow. Some super work there. Many thanks for the links . The comments about the variations in armament between some of the Vosper craft reminds me of a story I heard years ago. My elder brother's then possible/prospective father-in-law had served as skipper of a MTB/MGB in the Channel and told us about an occasion when his flotilla had got into a punch-up with a group of E-boats, off the French coast. He described how, after the shooting was all over, they found the E-Boat they themselves had knocked off beached and abandoned, with no-one around on the shore. Apparently seeing a golden chance, Mr Ludlow said they went in alongside to take a look and discovered the crew had left all the things they shouldn't have; papers; log books; the works. While some nabbed all the documents they could, he said some of his gun crew went over with tool bags and came back a surprisingly short time later with one of the E-Boat's main armament, plus every bit of ammo they could find. He said his gun crew wanted one because they thought it was a decent bit of kit and would give them more clout. The most interesting part of this, for me, is that - as Mr Ludlow put it - after they had used the gun in several engagements they had to go "replenish" their supply of ammo. He always told his commander that he was taking his crew out for some "training exercises" (which apparently left the chap impressed with this particular boat's zeal) but was actually hunting E-Boats so they could nab more ammo. Seems they did this on such a regular basis that E-Boats spotting a lone MTB mooching around near their side of the ditch used to disappear pronto. Leaves me wondering just how unusual some boats' armament was.

There are several builds over on Shipwrights - a couple with interesting mods as well. Well worth a look, I've been bookmarking them as an Italeri Vosper is just about the only thing in my stash - to be started when I finish my scratchbuilt effort... I realise this is bumping an old thread but I am very interested to know if anyone has currently got one of the Italeri 1/35 Vosper kits on the go? I'm still slowly collecting items for the Elco build but it's so damn hard to stop ogling the Vosper (and the Schnellboot...and the M.A.S.) and would love to see what others have been able to do with the kit.

Mystery Vosper?? |

Hello everyone, The attached photo shows a Vosper MTB somewhere in the Adriatic area during WW2. I got the photo from the PT Dockyard (wargaming manufacturer in 1/600 scale) but he doesn't have any info as to which MTB it is nor does he know when the photo was taken or precisely when so I'm asking --- does anyone out there know? For those of you building or have built the 1/35 Italeri Vosper kit, they announced yesterday that they are releasing a 1/35 crew. Also note the Elco kit which contains SO radar which has been used on some of these Vospers.

Micheal,
Good evening ... Merry Christmas to you and ALL here....
Yes, that drawing is accurate, I ran it by John Lambert before it went into the book.
And, as an aside, everything in that book was verified by Mr. Lambert. He was most kind as to check my facts. He's a very nice man.

Re: Calling all Vosper 70' MTB fans |

I'm NOT in any way an expert but I really like Italeri's big torpedo boats. I would like to do the Vosper as a boat based in England and with the medium/light grey hull paint scheme and it looks to me like MTB 76 on the cover of the Squadron book fits the bill nicely. Given that it's only one number off from the boat Italeri based the kit on, I assume that it's just a matter of slapping a new number on the side and painting it up the way I want, but I know basing a model off an illustration can be asking for it. So...
Can anyone here tell me if the painting of MTB 76 on the cover of the Squadron Vospert MTBs in Action book is accurate? Can it be built pretty much straight from the Italeri kit? Any idea what colors of grey I should use? Any help is greatly appreciated and I can't think of a better bunch of people to ask than those here. Thanks!

Re: Calling all Vosper 70' MTB fans |

This picture of 84 is in 'Mediterranean MTBs at War' by Reynolds & Cooper. (posted for discussion purposes only, I'll happily remove it if anyone complains) I particularly wanted to do a Med based MTB, and I had the Italeri Breda in the stash, the camo is a bit more interesting too as it seems to be a local variation on the standard Admiralty scheme with extra countershading under the bow. Its the only picture I have, but the book helps put her operations in perspective which I found interesting so its the boat I went for. The rest of my notes are based on 'Allied Torpedo Boats', Popes 'Flag 4', the Squadron 'In Action' and lots of Googling! So far so good! I've noticed a number of different 'styles' for the torpedo mounting rails, the kit parts aren't that inaccurate as the style they've moulded is seen on these boats, its just that 84 has a different style, though the kit parts are pretty clunky crude mouldings anyway that need a lot of dressing-up to look good. The other thing is that very few of the images I've found show the CSA gear on the aft-deck as Italeri have it, in fact it seems that in many cases the gear wasn't fitted at all! Thanks for the feedback on the Lambert drawings, alas it looks like the book is hard to come by, second-hand prices in the 70 quid range, I think I'm going to plump for a set of the drawings as I might make use of some copied sections as part of the display-base I'm building.
