JT - nice to hear you plan on picking this up again, with the custom parts it should be sweet. It never ceases to amaze me how 5+ yrs can slip by on projects I "Table for a few months"
Nothing like damage to dampen my enthusiasm.

PS I'm the guest who resurrected this thread - thanks for the update.

I should just sign up, seems to be a great site.

Sorry, it had been postponed. Minor damage from my move 5 years ago put it on the back burner. Since then, Ive been working on Merit's 1/350 Yorktown.

I still plan on getting to them eventually. I picked up GMM's p/e set a few years ago, and now that 3D printing has taken off, theres plenty of correct guns that can be used instead of scratch built. Currently waiting for some decent 1/500 planes that cost less than $20 for 4. Mr. Monkey has been kind enough to make several Yorktown class pieces that I plan on adding.

I think I have 4 unbuilt kits plus 1 built as the Hornet without the Mitchell bombers which is in 1 of the unbuilt kits. 2 of the kits I want to convert to the Ranger & Wasp plus do the Yorktown & Enterprise at different periods of the war & redo the Hornet so it will have the bombers on it. already acquired some 5"38cal guns from Carl but will need some more plus a fair number of 20mm guns.

This is one of my favorite kits, too.

Nice to see some great work here and hope JT will continue.

Last post was 7 yrs ago - was this project abandoned?
Was looking forward to seeing the finished pics - this is a super hard kit to make 100%. The hull shape and deck details are (to me anyway) very nice.
Though all the guns are really bad or not included and the island is just wrong. plus the hull could use much more detail.
Anyway looks like you were well on your way.

PS: The plastic sheets behind the 5 inchers is a great touch, wish I had known about it when I built mine - being able to see daylight through that gap in profile is just hideous.

PSS: Pics of my build will be going up on http://www.foobuggy.com/revell_yorktown.htm in the near future. Currently just a kit review.

Great work so far. Like many others, I have great memories of this kit, particularly the Hornet, as my great uncle served aboard her.

I have been looking at her again lately, and am considering a better build than anything I could do as a kid. It looks like a challenge, particularly with:

1. The island. Whew. Where to start? Might be better off with a scratchbuild.
2. The deck. The front looks wrong for the Hornet. Can someone comment on the Nautilus replacement? Is it worth it?
3. Aircraft. While the 16 Revell B-25s are OK, I'd love a few F4Fs, etc. Does White Ensign no longer make them?
3a. Along the same lines, it looks like Starfighter does a nice set of decals for aircraft in this scale. I am very intrigued by those...
4. PE details: Looks like the GMM set is the way to go here.

I might be biting off more than I can chew here!

Thanks! I dunno why, but I love this model. Its the perfect size, I just wish there was more stuff out there near this scale. Working on getting all the scratch built stuff smooth and looking good, pretty hard though.

Heres a preview of the bow support structure so far. Still need to add more detail to the support beams, but they're getting there!

Your build brings back a lot of memories. I don't know how many of those I did, though most of my builds met disastrous ends. :thumbs_up_1:

Very nice work, I like your scratched items. I'll be following your build.

The old odd scale Revell kits are pretty hard to get accurate. Great to see someone doing this so well!

Small update for the Yorktown. Trying to fill all the holes and lines with putty, hard job. Island is slowly starting to take shape, good thing some pe rails have arrived!

Thanks guys!

I found the information board on the Yorktowns blue-prints, though Id never seen it in any picture before.

Those doors were for ventelation, not access. No need to move them

The reason I ask is because instead of being level with the outside deck, if you look at the doors, they're actually raised a few 'mms above (or about 6 feet with a 1:1 scale). I was thinking of moving the wall back a little bit, lowering the wall so that the doors are level with the deck, and open a few to show hanger detail.

While building the Enterprise's island, I got some photos mixed up of her before and after her '43 update. So now Ive got to redo quite a bit (luckily nothing to bad). I have had to cut the back part of the islands funnel, since the model has the back radar deck way too high (its supposed to be ontop of the rear lookout booth, but its instead higher above that).

Ill have more pictures in the next couple of days, when I show some real, noticable progress

What you circled is an Information board used on both the Yorktown & Enterprise from when they were put into service until 1940 sometime. I don't have pictures of it on my hard drive, but if you look in the SBC Helldiver in action, you will see a few photos of it. It displayed the ship's information on it. Course heading, speed, etc... When most of the planes got radios installed, it was no longer nessasary and it was removed.

The planes in the kit are BT-1s, not SBDs. While the SBD and BT-1 share the wings, they are different. Compare the Engine cowl to drawings/picturs of a BT-1 and then to SBDs. Then check the Greenhouse. Becomes obvious.... :doh_1:

Those doors were for ventelation, not access. No need to move them.

Good luck with your build!

Hello all, im JT, new guy here. Im 21, I dont have much experience in making ships (Ive done cars and planes, but nothing usually more than OOB), so this will be interesting. I dont have much experience in scratchbuilding, p/e's, and even finishing models (hehe, I never seem to finish!), but Im going to attempt them all with these builds.

I first became interested in the Yorktown class carriers a bit over 5 years ago, when I was building WW2 planes. My favorite plane was/is the B-25. I bought many versions of the plane kits, Minicraft, Accurate Mini's, Iterali, and Revell. I found the Revell Doolittle Raid kit online and picked it up, it included both a 1/72 B-25 and 1/480 Carrier with little B-25s on it, how cool! I instantly became absorbed in the history of the Doolittle Raid (which furthered my love of the B-25), as well as the history of the CV-8 Hornet. I finished the model, which I felt was my best job yet, but I also happened to have little brothers (4 and 6), who touched everything that held a remote interest to others. Naturally, Planes went missing, parts broken, and not just the Doolittle kit itself, everything. I put some of the models on a high shelf, where they have since collected dust. Now that they're older, im trying to get back into the hobby.

Image

So far Ive purchase 2 Revell Doolittle Raid kits, and a 1987 Revell Yorktown (same scale at the Hornets). My plan is to convert one of the Hornets into the CV-6 Enterprise, so I could build all 3 ships. Ive done a bit of research (though nowhere near done) of the ships, and im going to try to build the ships as they appeared at Midway, the only time they were together. I do have some questions about the ships though

In this picture, Ive circled in red something coming out of the Island. I havent been able to find any pictures showing this, and dont know why its on there.
Image

And then the side of the hull confuses me. The yellow line is drawn along the point where the kits opening hanger doors are, which could/should be level with the closed off hanger doors that we're molded into the hull, where the white line is. Should I cut the wall of the hanger off of the hull, and correct/level it with the rest of the hanger?
Image

Does the terrible looking zero seem at a similar scale as the SBDs included in the kit?

The 3 sisters as of now

Thanks for looking!
