Scale decks arrive most promptly.... and look great. This will me to be much more aggressive with a Dermal to clear the decks. Now just awaiting PE before starting! ISW have also sent the full Leander kit along with some extra funnels (THANKS!!) great service! The new hull is actually better than the one I was playing with! So dilemma one: Start again? dilemma two: Waterline or full hull?
Got to talk at a conference in Guam next week so I will mull it over there! thoughts and suggestions appreciated!

Hello Andrew,
it is allways a pleasure to follow your WIPs. Good job so far of an interesting subject. With your personal note to dive HMAS Perth in my opinion that makes a project really more special for a modeler!

Hi again Andrew From the reply you received from Scaledecks, i assume you reside in Australia. Don't know where in OZ you live, but I hale from Sydney. If you live interstate, then meeting up might prove a problem, but if you are ever in this neck of the woods, please feel free to make contact. Regards. Tim.

Andrew and I had a great conversation about the process of getting a deck for his ship. He was undecided between Maple and Tinted, so I am sending both. I had to fire up the big printer to do the tinting pattern, in this case on my new Black Gum wood, which is mostly grain-free. Here are photos of the actuall decks being dropped off at the Post Office and on their way to Australia... They should arrive in about a week. Attachment:

Thanks Tim, I already have a copy and am actually in the process of reading it. Here are a couple of pictures of Perth as she is today. A turret Torpedo tubes 6" gun breach X turret Y turret Unfortunately these were taken before I had my DSLR and are taken with my video camera which was really not up to the task..... guess I will just have to go back! Hi Andrew Going off at a tangeant slightly, you might be interested in a recently released book by a Sydney (Aus) journo and broadcaster, Mike Carlton. The title - "Cruiser - The life and loss of HMAS Perth", by all accounts, is a terrific source of info. and is also a terrific read. Am yet to get round to reading it, but by all accounts, it is a 'must have'' for those with an interest in this ship. The publisher is William H einemann : Australia, the ISBN is 978 1 74166 839 1 (hbk). Thought you might be interested with regard to your project. Tim.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement....
Given the amount of damage that will be done to deck to remove all the necessary items I will have to re do the deck. After discussing this with John from scale decks and making up several trial templates I think this is possible to do. I have therefore ordered the full kit from ISW and deck from SDs..... Lets hope I haven't just blown $400!

Actually... it just occurred to me that a possible solution would be to remove all the deck fittings and put on a wood deck e.g. Scale decks offer uncut material. If anyone has experience with doing something like this I would be great to hear form them?
thanks

I've used a plastic scriber to good affect on resin: http://www.micromark.com/Panel-Scriber- ... ,7194.htmlIt was made for styrene and shines in doing that. It will work on resin well, but you have to have the right touch. Several light pressure passes instead of one heavy one. Practice on some scrap first to develop the right technique and I bet this will do the job.

Andrew, while I don't have any answers for your question, I just want to let you know that quite a few people will be very happy that you have taken on this project. They can now be assured that once you are 90%+ through your build, some model company will release a plastic kit.

HMAS Perth 1:350 |
|
|
Hi Guys, I've been keen to build Perth for a couple of years. We dived her in 2009 and I know some of her survivors. Unfortunately there are no 1:350 models of her. I am therefore investigating the difficulties of converting the ISW Ajax to represent Perth. Now, while the plans and the figures say that Perth is a bit over 2 meters longer than Achilles ( and 30cm wider) on the plans from Profile Morskie the inter turret distance appears to be within 1 mm of the ISW Achilles. In fact it is quite difficult to see exactly where the extra length has been added. From what I can tell so far things seem to fit quite well and although it will not technically be exactly correct for length etc. the difference will be imperceptible without the real thing next to it. Here's where I am up to with this experiment so far. The hull was sent to me in error when I ordered their Exeter model so at worst it will become scrap but if this look promising I will purchase the rest of the kit and give it a go. I've not attempted something this ambitious before nor done a resin kit before so any advice is much appreciated! Your opinions valued! Andrew Armour extended and deck behind bridge added. The aft half of this will have tread plate rather than wooden deck when finished. Forward deck reconstructed and rear susperstructure templates. The central deckhouse will almost certainly have to go. Rear 4" gun deck template. The vents from the deckhouse below interesting line up perfectly. The deckhouse itself is not quite the correct shape but given the damage that will be done to the deck if I attempt to modify it and the fact that it is under the 4" gun deck I am tossing up whether to modify it. Any suggestions on how to regroove the deck where I have had to remove structures would be greatly appreciated!
