I'm not to the sprue stretching point yet. Going to try to find a wire, thread, or line that will work. I don't mind if everything is relatively similar thickness as long as it looks right.

Shane!
I agree with you. Caenis is often too thin for larger scales.
I keep some copper-thread (ultra fine) with known thickness for comparison. Then I calculate thickess like this:
Flagline: ca 1 cm : scale = thickness. (here I think the caenis is quite suitable for your Arizona).
Antenna thread: Same
General rigging: 2cm
Supporting cables: 3-4 cm

You are probably more used to inches, but I guess you get the point.
THEN, I use stretch sprue. I'm not warming and fastening before pulling like Jim B does, I simply warm the sprue using a candle. When it is warm and soft, I pull apart - with both hands. First carefully untill I get the thickness I want. Then a quick (not too quick) pull till your arms are stretched. And you have a thin thread. More heat - thinner thread.

I guess a good supply store can get you copperthread or something simillar for comparison.

I great advantage with the sprue is that if (when) you should happen to put you hand right into the web... Only the sprue will break, compared to caenis or nylon that often will break antennas and masts.

Takes some practice to get used to, but it's worth it!

so after using the caenis thread on my 1/1800 Texas I've determined it way too thin for the Arizona. Going to have to find something else for rigging.

thanks. Still have rigging left to do. This was a pretty much Out of the Box build. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on PE, extra parts, trying to scratch build anything, etc. as this being my first ship, and also first model in a long time I had a lot of supplies to buy.

I'll post some better pics once I finish it up.

Shane,
Just went thru your ARIZONA build. Very nice job on an old kit. I've built this kit many times and each time I went a little further in changing things and "cleaning" up the poor injection relief of this kit.
With this kit being rather "cheap" you can do like I did and use it as a base to "pratice" scratch building different things and adding details you might have been on the fench about trying.

Although your build pretty much nailed it for a VERY nice, clean build. Great job.

Same rigging material, but a bit larger ship.

that's a better representation, methinks. Also went through your gallery and snuck a peek at your Bismarck. :) Certainly better than I would have done at 15.

Looks pretty good, Timmy. But that ship, even being 1/350, looks to be smaller than the Arizona. But. I'll go with this thread, worst case scenario, I hate it, and pull it off and use something else. Probably one of the easier things to redo on this model. And I do have four 1/700's that this will work perfect for.

Also, work on the Super Etendard continues.

depending on the type of lines I am trying to replicate, sometimes I double it up in 1/350.

You got that right! I have had the same spools (black and white) for 6 or 7 years, and you cant even tell that I have used any of it. A spool lasts a lifetime for sure.

IT came in the mail today so it looks like i'll finally, hopefully, be able to finish the Arizona this weekend. But man this stuff is tiny. I'm wondering if it's not possibly too small for 1/426.

Mark,

The crane arrived today. Have it painted and installed already. Now all I have to do is wait for that line to get here so I can do some rigging.

Here's a shot of the boat deck.

Excellent Thanks Mark! :) Should arrive just in time for me to finish everything up. Only lack that crane and the fine line to arrive for the rigging.

While i've been waiting...

I did some research on ye old internets and found that the actual color used by the Argentina Navy is an exact match for Model Master "Gunship Grey". I picked up a rattle can of that at the local hobby store and it looks like a perfect match. Only thing is now to try to figure out if i'm going to do the plane in a gloss or flat finish. My original instinct was to go flat but on the videos i've seen they're actually a pretty shiny gloss so I think that's the way I might go. But as the two wings here are the only parts that i've actually gotten done i've got a long way to go. lol even if it is just a 1/72 scale. But I am really happy at the paint match. After they've had another day or so to dry i'll finish up the landing gear compartments.

Shane,

Sent you a PM about the part. I have it and can send it to you.

Glad to see that somebody actually had something spare that i needed, especially out of such a basic kit. Nice little stroke of luck :)

Indeed. The technology has come a long way in just the last few decades. Not to mention since the 1950's when the Revell molds for Arizona were made. ;)

Well done Hallis!

This show that it is absolutely to "rework" an old model and make it look decent! I already have two such model in "my pages" in this forum: Heavy Cruisers Lützow and Admiral Scheer. Both originally built by in 1978(!)
And by the way: I also had a break for around 20 years.
And by the way (2): I also built your Arizona kit - back in the late sixties... Ended up as a target for my airgun, I believe...

Also fun to note how much modelling technology has changed over the years..

To show my point I enclose an as built-picture 1980 and a five years ago-picture of my Torpedoboot T28 1:400 Heller

Still waiting on some really really fine line to arrive so I can attempt some rigging and finish this thing up.

In the meantime i've been working on a little Mini Hobby 1/72 Dassault Super Etendard that i've had in my closet FOREVER.
