I wouldn't have been able to produce deflection scales without your help.
I made moderate progress and here's what I've done:
The bridge structure is assembled entirely of PE - a very nice feature of the Artist Hobby set.
One thing was missing, though - the inclined ladders providing access to the individual levels.
I cut openings in the PE decks early in the build to accomodate the ladders.
Here you can see them attached:

I went on to affix the rails to the bridge platforms, this time using the pre-measured railing Artist Hobby provided.
It's somewhat thicker than the GMM railing used elsewhere but that's not major problem as it will be covered by canvas anyway.
Searchlights have also been added.

The canvas was simulated by the usual way of brushing PVA glue on the railing then painting and highlighting only the outside.
The bridge assembly was attached to the signal platform.

Marijn, thank you very much!
Of course its not the railing I'm dissatisfied with. In fact I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out.
I wanted to write rigging, those cage aerials.
I'm still considering improving upon them.

Wow, what an amazing detail! I love all these small touches like chains to cover the openings in the railing at the top of ladders, wooden steps on inclided ladders, etc. ...
The figures look excellent, and are very well posed!
I'm not sure what you feel to be wrong with your railings. I wish mine were this fine looking...

So congratulations on an amazing job! I'm looking forward to the dio too.
Cheers,

Marijn

PS: thanks for your comments on my book! Much appreciated!

Thank you Jim for the kind words and continuous support during the construction of this model.
I have a firm intention to go to Telford but I have to finish the diorama first.
I hope I will get it done by then.
And yes, Derfflinger will be at anchor with Tiger steaming by.

Tiger is done-- phew! :thumbs_up_1:

I look forward to seeing ( at Telford?) her sharp clean state juxtaposed to the down-at-heel Derffllinger

Lots of fine detail and great posed figures!

Tiger under-way ; Derff at anchor?

Note the rating pulling halyards (obviously hoisting signal flags), another looking for more flags in the locker and the third ready to operate the semaphore.

I will post good quality photographs in the "Completed models" section and send them to be presented in "What's new" when I deem this model completely finished pending my decision about the refinement/partial reconstruction of the railing.

Thank you all for your perseverance in following this lengthy build and all the encouragement given by the countless nice comments!

Marijn, I attended a local contest with the Tiger and there I could buy your book.
It's wonderful!

I have finished this build - I will see if there's time to refine the railing (or if I'm capable of doing it at all).
I have a tight schedule because I have to finish the diorama for Telford and sadly have to repair Defflinger's mainmast and rigging - a paper roll has fallen on her today.
Anyway, here are some picture of the crew. There are 77 of them plus three in the wheelhouse (not visible).
I tried to make them look three dimensional by applying some superglue gel to their torso like Marijn does but omitted the baking soda.
I also attempted to assign duties like pulling ropes, etc. to quite a few of them.
Some of them seem unnatural, others nor so much.
Mind you, this is 1:700 and I was in a hurry because I wanted the ship to be ready by the time of the contest.

Great! :) :) :) I'm already looking forward to it too!
If now we could only persuade those Brits to leave their island for once and attend a show on the continent...

Jim, yes, Nick's New Zealand is among the very best models I have seen.
I really like the way he presents his ships.

Marijn, it will be an absolute delight to meet you at Mosonmagyaróvár!
I'm looking forward to it!
I'm there every year.

Meanwhile:
I started to prepare the crew.
I used figures from Lion Roar, Flyhawk, Eduard and GMM.
Attachment:

I think LR figures with adjustable limbs and Flyhawk's set with multiple poses are most useful.
I attached some of them to the fret shown. They are thickened and primed.
25-30 additional figures need to be treated similarly.

And finally I started some preliminary adjustment of the diorama base.
This is just a deliberately blurry teaser shot...
but you get an idea.

Sadly, I recently found out I won't be able to make it to Telford this year (next year should be ok though), so I'll miss seeing these great models… :(

But now chances are very good that I'll be able to visit the Mosonmogyovar show for the first time! :)
Since it is in Hungary, maybe I'll see your Tiger there George?

Cheers,

Marijn

@ Georgy Pek--please forgive the temporary hi-jack of your thread! :wave_1:
=======================================================
Our friend Bill says....

" I haven't modelled for a long time now "

Ha!! that' s the distraction of a new business, new home and a new wife !! :thumbs_up_1:

Good to see you back on-board -- albeit watching and observing from a safe distance us strange model -MAKERS ! :wave_1:

===================================================================================

Cage aeriels are an interesting and sometimes divisive conundrum...

I personally subscribe to the less - is - more approach...

for example a bit like funnel handrails NOT made of PE.. .

( always over-scale in 1/700 ) ==> always compare any PE handrail or rigging to a 1/700 Human scale figure

so -- I prefer thin wire with thin pencil strokes simulating the shadows of the stand-off's

==========================================================================

I think Cage aeriels in 1/350 are OK--still over-scale- but much less so as the general gargantuan bulk of a 1/350 Battle-cruiser mitigates the weight aeriels

I cite the example of my chum Nick's recently posted HMS New Zealand--

I advised him to space the spreaders out 2 to 3 times as far apart as the true scale would be

and it did give a lighter effect

and an example of what I mean!

I now retire silently and will desist from future hijacking of this thread :cool_2:

I look forward to seeing you both at Telford...

( I have managed 2 models this year ...) phew!

Thank you George... That was a very lovely compliment... and particularly so coming from a modeller who I have always had the highest regard for... ever since I first saw your work on the Airfix 600 scale models from years ago... you, and Jim and one or two others were my inspiration then and you all still are...

I haven't modelled for a long time now, but I still have everything (and far too many models) and one day I will restart... but in the meantime, I will be at Telford this year, I would like to meet you in person... and see your Tiger. She looks wonderful...!

Nicolas, thank you much! I think your work is what's really exceptional.
Jose, I have limited space at home which was the main reason (besides many other causes) why I haven't built anything in 1:350 yet.
That (I mean the space available) might change however in the not-so-far future and then, who knows, I might tackle something bigger...
Bill, when I commenced this buid I have read your thread and stated that yours were the finest cage aerials I have seen in 1:700. I think this statement still holds true...
Marijn, thank you! First I need to provide the ship with a crew then I will put both in the water.
I hope I can show them at Telford.

Fantastic work George!!! :worship_1: :worship_1: :worship_1:
With a model like this, I won't lose interest quickly... :)

Regarding the cage aireals, IMHO among the three models Bill might have found the best balance between realistic distance between spacers and lightness. But the regularity of the spacers and finesse of work on yours is simply amazing, so I would just leave it as it is.
Many thanks for the step-by-step by the way!

Almost ready to put the two ships in the water together? :)

Cheers,

Marijn

Hi All,

'Long time, no post'... But I've been here, lurking in the background.

Fabulous work on Tiger... Exceptional. I too struggled with cage aerials... my main issue was getting the tension right without damaging masts and yards (which didn't really solve) and getting the 'lightness' right, which I think I did to a degree... Here is my post from 2010 (if it works!)...

Bill Livingston wrote:
Made another four or five cage aerials but could only use two of them. The frustrating thing is, all were quicker to do than the first one, but, as they were longer, it was much more difficult to get the same tension in each mono line. They also needed to be stretched quite hard in order to take up the correct shape. Because I had opted to mount them as they are in the real ship.. i.e. not directly to the upper yard arm but on a downline attached to the yard, the tension required to get everything in the right place has resulted in the upper yard bending quite dramatically. I have only managed to mount two of the required four... so when I do the other side I can even up the mainmast again... but I will still have to tackle the amount of force on the upper yard arm. There are two lines supporting the yard and If I put a bit of tension on that it will straighten a little... but there is a LOT of force on all the aerials in this model.. so it going to be a bit of a gamble that they will not pull the mast apart eventually.... The lines are considerably stronger than you would think looking at them. Anyway... despite the negative points they look really good and I have got as close to 'in scale' as I can get. Damn difficult to do though!!!

EDIT: Here is a picture of the last of the four cage aerials on the jig... As long as this doesnt collapse when I cut it free thats it... all over. I think the results so far have made me feel it was a worthwhile excercise but it was much harder than I thought to find a method that works and allows you to build something this small, consistently. I think I will avoid cage aerials in the future!!! :Mad_6:

Image
The last of the four...

Image
Three quarter view.

Image
And another... side on...

I still have the downleads from the arrays to do and all of the other side... Hopefully I will get that finished tomorrow... Phew! And this was supposed to be an easy build to get me back into this!!! Great model from Combrig and its lovely to build.... but I think I have made it more of a chore than I should have done... Ah well... I have learnt a lot!

Bill

I managed to finish it... eventually. You can find the whole thread on here... The cage aerials still look good five years on, but I really should replace that top yard one day... Anyway, here is a picture of the cage aerials complete... I'm still pleased with them... but at 700 scale they are not easy...!

Sean, Greg, Chris, Jim, Dan and Kevin,
thank you for your kind words - they mean a lot to me!

Stefano, I did find the naval museum in La Spezia and found it very interesting.
We have visited Bella Italia on several occasions and always had a great time.

This build has become so protracted that I think many people have lost interest in the meantime.
After all it's just a 1:700 battlecruiser from a resin kit and work started almost two years ago.

Jim thank you for your valuable remarks with which I generally agree and had the same thoughts upon seeing the completed rigging. I'm still considering how I can imporve it, but will complete the cew first.
