thank you....the 'big one' has now been started...the 1/350 seen here is now going to one of my son's, I was going to sell it to help fund the Pontos kit and a glass case for the 1/200 kit but my son mentioned this model over new year (he's always liked it) asking if he could have it when I leave this mortal plane, a very small request considering the value of some of the models that I have, it's going to be a difficult task to work out who has what when the time comes. Anyway, I have therefore told him that he can have it now as I'll be building the larger version....he will finish the model himself which I'm sure he'll make a great job off...

regards

Pete

well as you've probably seen on my Facebook timeline Tim, I have a rather large steam locomotive to finish too...I have to say though that doing a little plastic work sounds very appealing after all the heavy engineering of late....I may well get back on the 1/350.....:)

Hey GG, looking forward to your build. I've moved your thread to the work-in-progress section, so no need to make a new one.

Thank's Bill

I did look for a 'work in progress' forum but have failed to find it so far? I have already posted in the Pontos thread and James is aware of me wanting the detail kit, they are out of stock just now, he did say that when in stock the kit will include new frets, I have it sitting in my shopping cart on the Sovereign site...:)

As for finishing the 1/350, that's an unknown...I have been out of the loop so to speak re plastic kits for a very long time but couldn't resist the 1/200 after discovering it's existence. I have built a number of Hoods including scratch-built in the past as it's my all time favourite warship and so when I found this new kit (new to me) I had to have it. To be honest and not blowing my own trumpet building this kit would be a comparatively relaxing exercise for myself and thus a nice chilled alternative to my other big engineering builds. It's unlikely that I could find the time to build both, may sell on the unfinished 1/350 but undecided for now as I would like to finish it, but then would I be able to devote the time needed for the larger kit?...I'm only 57 but feeling very mortal these days when looking at my various projects still to be finished before I fall off my mortal perch...:)

kind regards

Pete

edit: ah,,scrub that, just found 'work in progress'...cheers..:)

Hi Pete and welcome! :thumbs_up_1:

There are a few of us building Hood now... I've just started mine (in the 'Work in Progress' forum), along with Jason's thread that several other builders are contributing to.

And yes... its a huge model... and the more you get into it, the bigger it gets!

The Pontos set is virtually indispensable, so thats a must. Speak to James at Sovereign about getting the extra updates and revisions, along with the extra sprue for the funnels... James will know exactly what you will need, but its worth reading through the Pontos thread on Hood in the Manufacturers section as well. There are answers to pretty much all the questions raised... you just need to keep reading!

Look at EJ Foeth's 'On the Slipway' as well if you haven't already.

Nice start on the 350 Hood... will you be finishing it alongside the 200 Hood, or leaving it and going back to it later?

I look forward to seeing you start... so please post your 'work in progress'. Nothing helps the rest of us keep motivated more than someone else making progress... It really is a bit of a journey, but its absolutely worth it :thumbs_up_1:

Hi guys

I'm new to this forum but not new to modelling, I have been a professional model-maker/engineer for 30 years so a bit of an old sea dog, 30 years ago i was very much into the R/C warship scene being a founding member of the 'Luton and District model boat club' and first 'Commodore'.
Anyway that's all in the past now, as i'm a new guy here I thought that i would show a model that I started a good few years ago which is far from finished. As the title states the model in question is Trumpeter's 'Hood' in 1/350 scale, it's still in very early stages which i'll run through.
It's cased, as I always buy a case before starting the model when talking 'ships' and once the hull is painted it's permanently mounted, one to keep it safe but also i find it easier to work on when it's solidly fixed. It's a waterline in harbour scene, the sea is still in it's basic state, the two patches are for small boats to add interest, the one closest to the ship will be for one of Hood's own motor boats, alas i've forgotten which, the other is for a small MTB boat passing alongside. At the time I bought everything available for making a detailed model, all PE sets, metal barrells for all guns, IIRC i bought different main turrets two, detailed Pom-Pom kits, figures and probably a lot more which I have forgotten. Painting is at an early stage too, deck has just had a base coat and first stained wash, there's another couple of stages for this before finished, funnel housing aren't fixed yet as there's a lot of rigging to do here first, bridge decks are also very bare at this stage with only a base coat on them, in fact none of the paint is in it's finished state yet.
I have a couple of pictures to show what stage the model is at..

Well that's the model, the big question in my mind is will i ever finish it? I have other much bigger projects that keep me busy but the real reason that i ask myself this question today is that i'm now the proud owner of the Trumpeter 1/200 'HOOD' kit which I didn't even know existed until xmas day when seeing a Trumpeter 1/200 Nelson on one of the Facebook pages, curiosity struck and I discovered the 'Hood', a few days later a courier delivered the box to my door that literally came up to my chin, I'm 5'7" so not tall but by no means a midget either.....of course I have since researched the kit and discovered the very impressive Pontos kit which will be added, I have also downloaded the latest from the Hood association website and will work from that to build a model just prior to her sinking, just after her new paint was applied about two weeks before she was sunk so the finished model will look fairly fresh, I will probably build it on slipway blocks just to add something to the model. As for when I start the model? well how long is a piece of string, as i said I'll need a case first and I also have those much bigger projects to finish although I suspect that i will start 'Hood' long before that.

Here's a picture of the 1/200 kit, it's big, very big and with the Pontos kit added should make a very impressive model and of more importance probably the most accurate model of Hood with the help of the 'Hood' association. BTW many moons ago (early 80's) i did scratch build a model of the ship in 1/150 scale using the 'Anatomy of the Ship' book by John Roberts, I still have this book which will be used again with this latest build.

Thanks for looking in guys..

Pete
