Welcome to the forum Patrik!

As we are members of the same club, I have seen this work-in-progress up-close. I can tell you it looks even much better in the flesh! Patrik is one of the very best scratchbbuilders I have ever met: the finesse, complexity and accuracy of the work are amazing. That Toureau crane even has a scratchbuilt engine in it!

I can't help with the historical information, but there are plenty of extremely knowledgeable people with anything USN on this forum, so I hope they will chime in. :)

Cheers,

Marijn

Hi all,

For a diorama with an airplane I’m building a small part of the CV10 Yorktown (WWII).
More specific the area of the deck edge elevator.
Scale 1/48. (see yardstick on attached pictures).

Subject: the dropping of a crashed Hellcat into the ocean, by means of a Le Toureau crash crane.
The plane is on the deck edge elevator.
For the construction of the under structure of the deck edge elevator and a part of the deck I used the drawings from “Essex-Class Carriers” by Alan Parker.
Attached the only more detailed picture I found on the internet: USS Leyte CV32.
On both sides of the deck elevator lift are two vertical profiles. These are at a distance from each other and are fixed on the ship's hull with horizontal supports.

Regarding the total size of the deck elevator and the fact that the verticals profiles are closely installed at ship’s hull, I have to assume that there are roll wheels installed in the space between the vertical beams. Two wheels on each side, on the top and on the bottom of the supporting structure deck elevator.
The front beam has teeth like a gear.
On the picture I see a wheel. Could this be a kind of motor?
This means that the elevator is electrical driven or??

So, as you notice a lot of questions to be solved before I can proceed.

Where can I find more detailed pictures or drawings of the hoisting structure of the deck elevator?
Could anyone help me information where to look at, whom to contact to?

Attached some photos of my project. Scale 1/48
It started with a Hellcat, broken into parts as shown in the movie “WW2 hit the deck”.
Then came the crash crane, completely crash built. I still have to finish the second tire.
At the back a part of a Willy Jeep.
Figurines have to be crash built as well.

Thanks in advance,
Patrik P.
