Topic review - 1/350 Scale ICM Grosser Kurfurst

I haven't done much ship building as other kits and other duties have kept me busy. I bought some finished pine with no knots, and a Ryobi One system router.

I had originally planned to stain the pine with some stain in my shed. But, when I opened the rusting can, I discovered that all of the pigments in the stain had become an ugly sludge in the bottom. Ruined.

Instead of rushing off to a hardware store and buying more stain, I remembered that I had some Tamiya Clear Orange gloss laying about. I gave it a go and am quite happy with the color. Best thing is that it dries immediately.

After converting the hull into a waterline model, I went is search of air-to-surface photos of any German dreadnought at speed. I wasn't very successful until it dawned on me to look for photos of the world's only surviving dreadnought, USS Texas.
Image
After comparing both vessel's Wiki sites, I discovered they were very close in length, beam, and displacement.
So, I was now armed with all I needed to make a wave pattern.

I used modelling putty to make all of the water textures. Then I added acrylic paints to give the color. Right now the latest layer of Future is curing before I start thinking about mounting the ship to the base. There's still a lot to do as I really want to add the depth of water to the base.

HI Jim,
That is a great build! Love the water base and background, too.

Shoelaces! Wow, I feel like I wasted a lot of hours over-engineering something so simple. Thank you very much for the lesson.

I think I'll find myself looking at your build a lot as I go along.

Thank you very much!!

hello Gazza

Torpedo nest--I have always used shoelaces=-- the fine braided texture allows subtle dryybrushing

here is my model of the sistership Koening in 1/350--built back 2000 ... (!)

alas 35 mm film camera scans

there is a whole world of shoelace sizes out there ! -best to check your diameters before you buy!

HI everyone,
After a bit of reading, I read that the barbette for turret D didn't fit properly with the battery deck. So, I corrected that before moving on. It took a bit of shaving in quite a few different places to get it in.

After that I tackled the torpedo nets. I haven't found a tutorial to make any, so I decided to use stuff around the house.
Image
This is the good side. At the center of each run of nets is a piece of steel bailing wire I had straightened with a drill.
Then I wrapped it in pieces of black nylon discarded by my wife. Finally to simulate cable wrapped around the nets I used silk thread.

Image
I'd really like to know how everyone else makes theirs. I'm not totally happy with the results, but I'll live with them until I can learn a better way.

Thanks for looking!

Right now Flyhawk has offered a 1/700 version SMS Konig, and according to solid information, their 1/350 scale Konig class is also under development, these kits are a result of the direct collaboration between Flyhawk and ICM. I'm pretty sure Flyhawk will offer specific upgrade PE parts for the 1/350 Konig as the 1/700 ones are already on the market.
So,if you are not that hurry to finish this ICM kits, you can wait for the Flyhawk upgrade kits, certainly will save you a lot of work.

HI everyone,
It's been a while since I posted anything here. I've mainly been build air and land models for the last couple years, even though I bought this kit some time ago.
Here's an online shot of the box art:

I've only got a little AM: Aber Barrels and Tom's Modelworks PE:

It seemed easier to attach the 15cm barrels with the breech ends still attached to the sprues.

I haven't quite decided whether I'm going to put it into a water base, or a more static display. Putting it on water will require me to get some figures for the deck. I'd probably use the Northstarmodels WWII German set as a base.

Trying to do the torpedo nets is going to prove a challenge. Never done them before and it looks like there will be a lot of cables to add. So far, I've added the shelves for the rolls of netting. No idea if the dimensions are correct. Kinda winging it as I can't seem to locate concrete data.

Thanks for looking!
