Today I completed the fit out of the model, and carried out the rigging using black Infini Model 40 denier (0.068mm diameter) lycra rigging line for most of it, and their white 20 denier line for the signal halyards.

Image

I do this using medium CA same as I used for the rest of the model, and apply a dab with a needle at one attachment point then touch the lycra line to it and let it tack.

Image

I then apply another dab of glue at the destination attachment point and use my tweezers to place the line there leaving a tail.

Image

Once both ends are secured I trim the tail off using a fresh Swann Morton 10A scalpel blade and tweezers.

Working the way round...

Image

I have found that my favourite way to attach lines to other lines is to cut over-size lengths, apply a dot of glue to the parent line then lay in the end of the new line. It's easier to do this, I've found, than try to get the tension right coming up to meet another line and then successfully trim a tail off without accidently chopping the line I'm attaching to!

Thank you!

I found some of these parts a bit fiddly to assemble. Everything fit properly, but alignment, holding in place and gluing was a challenge

Initial paint was applied at lunch time today to the new PE parts:

These are the work in progress pictures I was trying to get yesterday when I screwed up... the form is starting to come together.

I got the superstructure detail painted yesterday then went for some photographs and dropped the damn thing. Argh! It's OK but the little pole on the front of the funnel pinged off as did the ammo box cantilevered off the aft end. Both are gone... The pole is already replaced and painted. I am making a new ammunition box as, bizarrely, I have nothing similar here I could use! The scandal...

Anyway, I detailed the children to build a stone perimeter for an outdoor fire. We toasted some marshmallows and hot dog sausages.

Image

Repairs are now completed except for touching up the paint work. That'll teach me to allow myself to become distracted carrying a model placed together but not yet glued together carelessly!

Baldrick's Cunning Plan part 1.

I like the stern-down hull form of these trawlers as a diversion from more usual larger warships, so I wanted to show it off.

I made a template for spacing a pair of holes drilled into the keel:

Image

Two holes drilled thus:

Image

The hardwood base received a piece of second-hand masking tape to avoid drawing on the actual wood, and the centre found and marked thus:

Image

The template was centred on the tape markings and match drilled:

Image

A couple of short lengths of solid brass rod were cut and their ends slightly bevelled. Of course, the brass was brightened up with some sanding sponges first:

Image

Even Baldrick should be able to guess how we got from one state of affairs to the other at this point:

This isn't particularly cunning, I admit. If what I have planned next works out, then overall it will be a bit cunning.

More ventilators hollowed out:

Most of the superstructure is now painted. Some weapons and a few outfitting bits and bobs still to go, and those shall provide less visual impact.

Also, I added some draft markings using left over Pontos Model dry transfers that come with their deck sets (I've used loads of these and have a lot left over)

Some more photo etch addition and ventilator drilling before work this morning:

Image

I made a bit of a mess of removing the casting block below the wheelhouse leaving me an ugly gap. Oops!

Image

I've added a bulkhead from 10thou plasticard (it's 8.5mm wide by 4mm high) thinned down a bit to improve matters slightly:

Very nice work. I just love small, one-off, ships.

Thank you Martin :) I may add a small amount of more defined rust around the anchor hawse hole but not too much more. I think on something this size it could easily be overdone.

This barely qualifies as an update but the funnel has its brass added now.

I like the weathering. Subtle but effective.

Part of me thinks it would have been easier to provide them separately which would have made deck painting a fair bit easier as well as avoiding the chance of them coming pre-broken!

It's been a few days since I had time to do anything on this, but I got most of the detailing done on the wheelhouse before starting work this morning. Below is a nice piece of hardwood I found in the garage whilst selecting timber stock for the house rebuild.

I broke it! I placed a finger in the wrong position and broke off a ventilator which, needless to say, fell to the floor and is lost.

Image

I made a new one using 3 sizes of sliding fit brass tube from Albion alloys.

It started off over-length so it could be filed and sanded down to size.

Image

I drilled a hole in the deck to receive it:

Image

The replacement was glued in place (the apparent hole in the top was plugged with medium CA prior to trimming down to size):
Image

Once painted, I think it looks ok and I should get away with this.

Here's the hull looking lighter again with an enamel matt clear coat applied. I've also started adding the brass bits to the wheelhouse.
