Many thanks for the kind words lads, much appreciated.
Yes the 'R' Class are very neglected model wise alright. I have plans to do the entire class, eventually.

A truly miraculous achievement regarding the quality of the original kit! It is so good to see a fine model (let alone more of them!) of the neglected R-class.

Thanks Marijn. I'm finally declaring her completed having put a final coat of gloss varnish on the sea base this morning: Attachment:

I hadn't realised how filthy my camera sensor was. Will have to get it cleaned. Overall I'm pleased enough with the build and the sea base. Plenty of mistakes to learn from and things to improve on.
Thanks Marijn.

It's high time I actually finished this model. A busy year with work and what not last year saw practically no modelling done. Now it's time to finish things. I've decided to add a Fairey IIIF Seaplane to her. This is a kit bash / scratchbuild. The fuselage and floats are robbed from an Arado seaplane from a 1:400 Heller Admiral Graf Spee kit (I have aftermarked Arados from L'Arsenal which I intend to use on that..). The wings are scrap photoetch sprue cut to size and filed round at the ends with a Tamiya Diamond File. Then a coat of primer and a coat of black undercoat: Attachment:
DSC_0196.JPG [ 398.4 KiB | Viewed 559 times ]
I have also made a start on my next 'R' Class. H.M.S. Royal Sovereign in her 1942 fit. A scratchbuilt mainmast, Flyhawk anchors and funnel cap grille, main gun turret PomPom platforms and radars from the excellent Atlantic Models detail set. A helpful set of 1:400 RAF roundel decals from L'Arsenal should nicely finish off the seaplane. It will not be perfect but it will hopefully be close enough.

Little progress in recent months as I generally don't do much modelling in spring or summertime. However now that it's winter it is time to get moving again. A start made on the sea base, using the incomplete hull of what is to become H.M.S. Royal Sovereign to measure it up: Attachment:

I want to depict Royal Oak in a calm sea. So I have roughly sketched out the wake pattern and will try and carefully melt it into the foamboard by holding a candle flame near it. The idea came from Chris Flodberg's tutorial which is posted on this forum. Well worth a look and very helpful.

It's as wide as whoever designed the original kit made it, I have not modified the beam: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/frog-f122-hms-revenge--1111232

Thanks for the kind words lads. Unfortunately no progress as yet on the seascape. I was in more of a shipbuilding mood than a seascape mood. So I have been working on the next in line H.M.S. Revenge in her 1918 fit and H.M.S. Royal Sovereign in her 1942 fit: Attachment:

After a long break, crew figures finally added. I placed them mostly manning the AA weapons. Tom's Modelworks 1/500 Scale Figures. Attachment:

All that remains now is to get to work on the sea base.

She is almost finished now. I got the anchors and anchor chains added today. Still needs boat booms, crew figures, paint touch ups and mounting in a sea base. So almost there. Again between one thing and another I have not had time to work on her since May: Attachment:
DSC_0374.JPG [ 385.56 KiB | Viewed 2624 times ]
I used Artwox 1/700 anchor chain primed and resprayed to white. It is likely still too big even for 1/500 scale. But it is close enough for me to accept. It is difficult to make them out in the photo but I used the etched chains in the Atlantic Models Photoetch set for the 'blake slip' and 'screw slip' chains. Painted black and viewed against a dark grey anchor running strip they are unsurprisingly difficult to see. Will post some better photos when she is fully complete.

Thanks all for your kind comments. I am pleased with how she has turned out thus far. I really must get started on the sea base and add the final details to finish her off. For anyone interested who may not have seen it already here is a good documentary about her tragic loss in 1939: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk9CTEYqPjk
